@tomjennings dude I saw you favorite one of my posts & I apologize for being embarrassingly starstruck for a minute but you've been a huge influence on me since way back in the BBS era. you showed me tech & art/imagination can coexist. a ways back you wrote something about the way coyotes talk to each other called "coyote protocol" - I carried that with me & not long back wrote about a similar idea regarding fireflies. glad to see you here on Fedi, hope you check out my Gopher space one time. 🐱💕

@Cat Lol thanks! I'm so flattered! The meaning of "tech" has changed so much... of course I'm understand what you mean. I told you about coyote protocol? I intended to actually make them, I didn't, but I made a dozen boxes that built on the ideas using tiny radios, outdoors, batteries and solar, crhet live in the yard, a year now, and talk to each other when someone walks by, and play bird songs. But i should make the coyotes! I played with gopher, got frustrated with the limitations, but I'm thinking of it again, with maybe a site generator/updater instead of hand coding, with is is so error prone... Hey can you suggest gopher clients? Android and Linux ? What do you use?

@tomjennings I was too young to appreciate FidoNet at the time, it was something stuffy adults used to send mail to each other, but learning more about it later in life taught me that you can build something big & magical without approval from a committee or acceptance from a faculty, it just takes a passionate, hard working hacker or two. Gopher is another good example of this. it also showed me that some projects are finite, they have logical ends & it's ok to close them off or let them go.

@tomjennings I read it on your website I think. my firefly protocol described a way to make an LED firefly jars have a bit more personality than just flickering randomly. I haven't found time to publish it anywhere yet though.re. Gopher, if you prefer the CLI I like phetch: https://github.com/xvxx/phetch - it's super capable and user friendly, I use VF-1 as a backup - https://sr.ht/~solderpunk/VF-1/GUI I like Lagrange - https://gmi.skyjake.fi/lagrange/ - ostensibly it's a Gemini browser but it handles Gopher fine

@tomjennings Lagrange should also run on Android IIRC but I can't say for sure, I don't have a device.those browsers are the few niche ones that will render gopher://baud.baby properly - I'm an artist and hacker in equal measure so I deliberately fly in the face of what constitutes a "proper" Gopher hole hahaha

@CatI can't find Lagrange binaries anywhere. Looking for Android. On desktop, Gophie seems good! There's pocket gopher but only for old androids. @scott

@CatI found Lagrange and more from skyjake.fi... unfortunately I'm not setup to do builds, no longer have the interest in that level of stuff... I have too many code projects as it is... Too much to learn up front to try it out. On desktop, Gophie seems good! There's pocket gopher but only for old androids. What are you using for gopher server? I take it Gemini does gopher as well. Haven't started rtfm Gemini yet will shortly. @scott

@tomjennings @scott You can find a few pre-compiled Lagrange binaries here; https://git.skyjake.fi/gemini/lagrange/releases - YMMV depending on your Linux loadout.the .baby's backend is Bitreich's geomyidae gopher://bitreich.org/1/scm/geomyidae/log.gph - but it's a bit of an oddity in how you lay out Gophermaps, it uses its own syntax that is unconventional but I find helps with big cumbersome maps like mine. That's really all I can say re. daemons though, it's all I've used forever. @tomasino might have suggestions?

@tomjennings @Cat Lagrange handles Gemini and gopher sites, just as an fyi, and also has a TUI mode if you crave a TTY experience (I haven't tried it yet, but I really should...). If on Linux, there's a Flatpak version available too for easy of install - that's what I use at present.

@tomjennings @scott I can't speak to Gemini daemons yet, I haven't had a Gemini capsule in a while but it's on my radar to do soon.

@tomjennings @scott are you sure? this URL should have binaries for Linux, Windows, macOS - https://git.skyjake.fi/gemini/lagrange/releases - it might also be in whatever package manager your distro uses, I've never tried to build it myself so can't be much help there sorry

@Cat @tomjennings @scott Lagrange on Android is easiest to install via Fdroid. No code/compiling needed. As far as servers go, I'm running motsognir, which is a really strict option, and sorta the opposite of cat's choice. The one I normally recommend is gophernicus. Sadly, none of the options are very straight forward app installs.
