Everyone with an Arduino project has, starting as of NOW, six months to look for a replacement. If you don't start right away, I can point out someone who will be in a lot of pain in a few months.Believe me...https://www.qualcomm.com/news/releases/2025/10/qualcomm-to-acquire-arduino-accelerating-developers--access-to-iI know this will play merry hell with the 3d printer and mechanical keyboard scene. Innumerable hardware will die from this takeover.#arduino #qualcomm

@masek If you use Arduino IDE and libraries, save a copy fo the installer and you're fine. It's a simple install, no phone-home nonsense.Arduino and done vrey good things before this. That they are failing now is not a reflection on them. It was a wonderful project that wa wildly successful. It was never a growth corp. (Lol, their forum got toxic with knowitall gatekeepers a few years ago, but there's plenty of others.)Arduino spawned a revolution and that's all that matters.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temporary_Autonomous_Zone

@masek WOW! Surprise! lolEverything's a TAZ...The Arduino project was wonderful. I switched from the classic command line make system to Arduino IDE about 2005. For modest sized projects its unity and simplicity is great. The editor is at least consistent and decent for what it does.Adruino was also hardware -- but that diversified immediately, and now that ecosystem is broad, healthy, and not going away -- and the money's not been going to arduino.ccThen... 5? year ago they upated the IDE, from version 1.8xx to 2.0xxx and it was broadly *hated*. The changes are awful, it took away the separate debug window. They moved the free download stuff further and further from view, added feetch no one wanted, compiling online, etc iotw classic enshittification.I assmy my experience in 2025 is common enough: I still use the IDE, but the old version, 1.8x, and almost none of the libraries I use, and none of the hardware, comes from Arduino; I'm using PJRC Teensy 4.1 (600 MHz ARM) or Adafruit (SAMDx1).I suspect users will contribute to the software ecosystem for some time.I truly do not want to go back to the make system, I know it's a macho (sic) thing amongst professionals but it's like gardening with a bulldozer to me. I like the simplicity of the IDE even for moderately complex code.I'm surprised Arduino has lasted this long; nothing but fond memories of them, and all things die eventually. Their demise seems to be part of their success.

@tomjennings Agree with pretty much everything you've said... I did get used to the new 2.0 IDE and I don't totally hate it now. (Serial Monitor in the main window is still *super* annoying!)Getting to the hidden settings did manage to help.https://rasterweb.net/raster/2023/03/25/advanced-preferences-settings-in-arduino-ide-2/

@tomjennings @masek The current Arduino IDE checks for board and library updates every time you launch it.If I were intent on evil, I could see a few ways to use that. I could issue malicious updates or just malicious license changes. I could demand subscription fees to keep it working. Or I could just refuse to let 3rd parties ever update their boards and libraries and let the whole thing rot.Replacing the Arduino IDE is a bigger deal than the hardware.

@kbobRight! I forgot about that! It's partly configurable; you can easily add more lib sources, I use that. I suspect and will check, that the library urlzls are on the config file. Arduino was a lot of things but never did I detect any shitty intent, ever. It's already pretty much over, it peaked some time ago, but it's not a failure! They were a mini revolution, the did very well, Arduino benefited very many people. The program is very well behaved. You can change a lot of config in the preferences file. They never attempted any lock-in tactics. Everything is of benefit to the user. Lots of folks like to look down on Arduino and its fansm I'm not one. I was a pro programmer for a long time, but not for some time. Arduino is a great tool. Also it's more portable than traditional make setups! You can literally copy the entire file treefto another xomputer, Linux Windows or macos, ring the right binary, and it's all 100% compatible. Serial device names change. The idea handles it all. It is and was extremely high quality software. @masek

@rasterweb ? In the Preferences menu it tells you where in the filesystem to find preferences.txt! It's not hidden at all! I don't use the 2.x version much. I'm not convinced it's based on electron. It's not a bulky install. One binary, that's it.Why does everyone hate Arduino?

@tomjennings Hmmm, I see no references to a prefs file in the settings on macOS..."The Arduino IDE 2.x is a major rewrite, sharing no code with the IDE 1.x. It is based on the Theia IDE framework and built with Electron." https://github.com/arduino/arduino-ideI think we're hating Arduino now because Qualcomm acquired it...

@rasterweb I'm running linux, hard to imagine that the preferences aren't stored in user space somewhere. Interesting thatr they don't call it out?

@tomjennings Yeah, I dunno… the advanced preferences I mention do present it all in a nice UI. Seems silly to hide it. It can also reveal the settings.json file.

@rasterweb > 2, rewrite, electronOh my! Thank you, and sorry, I stand corrected! It took them forever too to make basic UI stuff work. The lack of separate serial monitor is fatal to me. I make MASSIVE, designed-in use of the monitor with a substantial amount of display, and usually a terminal task that can interact with the little key:data database and enable/disable debug display on a module or functional basis. I simply could not write my code in 2.x.

@tomjennings The lack of a separate window for the serial monitor is extremely fucking annoying to me but I put up with it like I do with so much other software because I lack the skills to fix it myself. 😵‍💫

@rasterweb The earlier version is pretty good. But you'll have to reinstall libraries, I think, 2 did something funny to them if I remember right, but I might not be!

@masek The IDE is really the only thing to worry about, as the basic libraries are all pretty minimal, and contributions are usually better.A repository, or multiple, hmm maybe that's harder. I don't know how Arduino handled that, but ther interface is well designed enough that many entities have their own, eg Teensyt, that integrate into the IDE. They're just URLs to the IDE.The IDE itself is open source, https://github.com/arduino/arduino-ide?search=1The Arduino forums are kinda shit, but again, there's social diversity, lots of forums. While this change is not good, it's not a disaster, and honestly, Arduino formented a revolution, it's just moved on, a success really.
