I wonder if Microsoft secretly wants everyone to switch to Linux. There are certainly fewer reasons to stick to Windows every day: https://www.theverge.com/news/793579/microsoft-windows-11-local-account-bypass-workaround-changes

@geerlingguy they're way too late - I switched happily to Linux **checks watch** 31 years ago, almost to the day. It'd be very cool if the rest of the digital world realised what they're missing, though, and made the switch. The world would be far better without Microsoft in it.

@geerlingguy I am literally blowing away the Windows installs on The Lab laptops one at a time when no one is around, replacing it with an Xubuntu install with the same directory names, icons, and programs. So far nobody coming from a Mac environment has batted an eyelid, and Windows users have just shrugged and got on with it. When a linux install looks like a Windows install with the unwanted crap stripped out of it to a naive user, I think we're onto a winner.

@vik @geerlingguy many years ago I switched one org's backoffice to PCBSD after they had suffered data loss from viruses a few times. Set up a Windows XP theme which they were familiar with, and OpenOffice - the people took a week to familiarize and used it for years with no further issues.

@lightweight @gang0lf @geerlingguy It's odd to try to compare a proprietary kernel to proprietary OS's - as the only point of comparison is the proprietaryness. All BSDs are frankly just functionally terrible and are of no real competition to GNU.

@geerlingguy It seems odd to me that packaging IE in with their operating system was anti-competitive behavior worthy of an anti-trust suit, but forcing everyone to have a microsoft account so that all of their data is stored on Microsoft servers is not.
