       Masking and alt text are both cool things to do because they're rebelling against the status quo that encourages viewing consideration of others as weak and unreasonable.

       I think conservatives or centrists think they're being edgy or rebellious by being anti-mask and various related toxic stances because they're going against common decency. They're not rebelling against authority; they are authority, but they hate knowing that something that is self-evidently right exists out there and is being practised by a small number of people.They object to mutual aid because they hate that it's true that human communities thrive on compassion, including caring for disabled people. They object to gender and sexual autonomy and the pursuit of self and pleasure because it is actual freedom that threatens their fake "freedom" of religious and corporate control. They object to migration because it shows that they're not preordained to dominate the land as white capitalist patriarchs. Every advance towards equality achieved by Black people threatens them this way tooBut they think it's all edgy or defiance in the face of coercion, but there is no coercion from people forcing them to care about others. They're just being pulled into great guilt by the abstract truth that the right things to do, in moral and logical ways, reduces their power over others.
