My husband works in PR. He's really good at it because he is a person with whom it is impossible to stay angry. He even makes people who are angry at each other less angry just by being there. I don't know how he does this. So I shouldn't have been surprised when I asked him if PR people are worried about "AI taking their jobs."I tried to make a good case "look it can write a press release instantly""That's the easy part of the job.""What is the hard part?""People."

A lot of PR seems to be about sharing information in the right order to the right people. Keeping track of who gets the most exciting information first. Giving "off the record" hints to the right people. Making corrections to people who you know will lie before they even get the lie out in the first place. And doing all of this without making any of these people angry, in fact it's worse, you need to do this and most of them should really like you, so they think twice about running hit.

Also PR seems to be about NOT saying things often. It can be annoying when I get a PR answer to a domestic question. "Were you going to feed the cat?""I'm certain she will be fed and I'm really glad that you can take this over."Amazing.

@futurebird Sounds like “emotional intelligence”.The machines don’t have that. The machines aren’t intelligent. The machines don’t have emotions. They don’t read the room, have nuance, nor taste. Some people will figure this out faster than others.Especially people that don’t actually like people.

@futurebird that’s kind of my view about publishing too, although there is a big attempt to introduce AI at all levels. I’m in scholarly pub which is its own microcosm, and I often say to my colleagues that really we’re in a people business.

@futurebird I made the same argument with a VP of Software Engineering. VP: LLMs can write code, and even design docs. They will transform the industry. Me: Can they get two TLs that hate each other to agree on a common design? VP: ...

@futurebird 1. Thoughtful & Relatable: That truly resonates. Understanding people is more importat to PR than using flawless language. AI is unable to mimic timing, emathy, or warmth.2. Conversational & Insightful: Exactly. Although AI may write more quickly, it is unable to har or preceive its surroundings. Human connection is where the true art of public relations lies.3. Only humans are able to read emotions, which is where the true PR magic occurs. Ai can draft the message.

@futurebird That sounds like such weasel words when you write it. Is it different when he says it?

@futurebird You'd think more companies would've learned something from the movie 'Up In The Air', but I doubt many did. Good to hear that his co hasn't gone to the dark side yet, and tried to replace him with AI.

@futurebird I joke that I engineer the most hardest of subjects: people.Engineering stuff is easy. People is hard.
