@zeldman Please consider this scary thought: chatGPT has not yet started the enshittification pivot. That is yet to come. It is, for now, free of ads, free of clutter, and free of (obvious) manipulation. But of course that must change as they move into the "more profitable" part of their growth cycle. What will advertising look like in that environment. One that is already too manipulative? One that is already playing fast and loose with the truth. shudder with me at what is to come

@futurebird @zeldman Really good point, but the fake "AI" bubble looks like it's getting close to popping, so maybe they won't make it that far? Then again, I suppose more likely they'll go into total freakout mode when investments start drying out and throw every single thing at it they can until they can find a buyer.

@futurebird @zeldman No worries. It'll never be profitable. It was a scam from the beginning--the makers of generative AI scam the C suite idiots into thinking it can replace employees when it can't. Now it's just a bubble, and three times as big as the subprime mortgage bubble. The coming crash is going to be brutal, but it's inevitable.Ed Zitron can explain it better than I if you have the patience for long reads.Cory Doctorow is great as well.

@futurebird @zeldman Similar:Every person and every company going all-in on AI coding tools. Right now we’re in the “Uber practically paying you to take rides to drive taxis out of business” phase. But the end-game is to turn programmers and companies into Uber drivers, hoarding all the margin for themselves.“Macrohard” is a grift, but it is directionally where things are going.

@futurebird @zeldman I will look like "cramming paid content into the output, unrelated to the prompt input" - and it will be an absolutely dogshit business, since unlike the dozens of display ads on Google, or even mid-vid ads on Youtube, they will only be able to cram maybe 1-2 ads into each output, so they will immediately enshittify the experience further to get more ads in there...

@futurebird @zeldman In a big sense it does already manipulate people, at least by always agreeing with people and confirming their ideas; this makes many people believe they have brilliant ideas in any field, only to discover sooner or later they are shitty and do not work in the real world, thus causing depression and suicides.

@jones @zeldman I have to remember that people also talked to ELIZA for a long time too. So, this isn't something new, but it seems a lot more destructive.Would having someone who is hooked on AI watch another person using it, someone with ideas totally different from their own might help people to snap out of it?"I know it's not popular, but could the earth be flat?"GPT: "Generally most sources will say that the earth is round, but I can see you like to take on bold controversial ideas."

@futurebird @jones @zeldman I feel like the best way to get people to snap out of it is just to have them ask it about something they know about, then try to correct it and ask more stuff and watch as it degenerates more and more.As a general rule, people don't ask about things they know because they already know them. I did a few times because I used it for scenario type stuff (local, not the online crap, I won't touch that) and needed to test how accurately it would handle the worlds in question. Something really well known/popular like Skyrim will be in there pretty well and take a while to break down, but ask it about, oh, say an Ys game and it will tell you stuff that is just wrong enough to be maddening right off the bat, lol.

@futurebird @jones @zeldman There's a certain essential credence from being able to talk.LLMs are outright eloquent (producing close-to-real utterance patterns) while there's no there, there. The result is either no credence (it's a soulless husk) or much credence (eloquent words!).It's not especially wrong to think of LLMs as a credibility scam; it sounds like you should take it seriously. (Careful scientific use is summoning demons for knowledge; you have to be able to detect the lies.)

@michaelgemar @graydon @jones @zeldman Imagine a hammer, if you will, and when you aim for a nail it often swerves and hits your finger... but don't worry! It apologizes and says it will do better. Just give it one more chance. And you end up feeling bad for the poor hammer since you want to just give up on it and all your fingers are broken.

@futurebird @zeldman I actually dont think that ChatGPT's enshotifcation pivot, if it does come, will look normal. Its not a service that people actually _depend_ upon the way Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, etc. are/were. For most, it's just a curiosity. You can do an enshitfication cycle on a thing people dont truly give a shit about.

@d_j_fitzgerald @zeldman There are a group of whales who use it a LOT. Like people who just talk to it all day. It's not typical use though and I have questions about if it's ethical to even ... provide whatever that is.

@d_j_fitzgerald @zeldman OK I heard this story on a podcast, so it's *just* a story. BUT, there was a dad driving with his wife and kids. The parents are getting divorced, in part due to him using LLMs too much. They start having an ugly argument. Mom says "let's not... in front of the kids" (I think the story is told from the mom's side) He proceeds to ask his LLM to back up his side of the argument with leading prompts in *front* of the kids to prove the wife is in the wrong....

@futurebird @d_j_fitzgerald Yeah, there are plenty of articles about people who use them in dating (whether dating real people or LLMs with stolen face pics), etc already. There was the whole "roll back the latest GPT version because enough overly-invested people complained about losing the fake relationships they'd 'built' with the old version" debacle. We may not want to believe it, and we can hope that *most* people don't really care, but there *are* people dependent on it already.

@futurebird @zeldman Way ahead of you. A core application of my current research is running LLMs in enclaves, so end users can prove that a given response was directly from a well known model, and get a cryptographic proof of what initial prompt was used. Then at least when people are being targeted with covert targeted advertising, a plugin in their browser could prove it and warn them.

@DoctorDNS @zeldman This is what I keep anticipating— not just for this but corporate social media. Things like subtle promotion of organic posts that are positive about a brand— or even that suggest the *need* for a brand. Or maybe showing you that you have multiple friends who took a vacation to make it seem like you ought to do that too.The possibilities for manipulation are endless! There was some evidence facebook was doing this 8 years ago what has it become?
