I'm surprised that many people just seem to realize that the golden cage by #Apple is actually a golden cage! 🤷What have you thought when you decided for that (overpriced) #lockin situation?Of course, an #iOS device doesn't really belong to you. It's not up to you which apps you may install. You can't decide on delayed update slots. It's Apple's #cloud only. And Apple's history of business decisions is full of statements that are purely for the benefit of excluding alternatives for political and economic reasons.Apple will never be on your side. It will always be on the side of it's shareholders and - of course - any US dictatorship that will be in power. If this doesn't fit your set of requirements, get rid of Apple devices and use something else as long as Google hasn't destroyed #Android as well. With #Pixel (8+) and #GrapheneOS, you have the most power over your device+data, at the moment.https://karl-voit.at/2021/01/18/tool-choices/#ICE #ICEblock #publicvoit #PIM #privacy

@GeorgWeissenbacher I do follow a different approach.I don't choose a device and then select an environment. I do it the other way round after I followed the process from https://karl-voit.at/2021/01/18/tool-choices/Therefore, I would never buy an Android device which is *not* able to run the environment I'm looking for. And I do think that there are few reasons not to do so. You can get a used Pixel 8+ easily for a few bucks and still get a few years of device update support. If privacy/security/no lock-in is not on your list of requirements, this discussion doesn't make any sense because you have a totally different set of requirements. That's perfectly fine but nothing we need to "take care of" in a discussion like that. Therefore: choosing Apple and *then* complaining about Apple being Apple is somewhat ... naĆÆve IMHO.And I've lost confidence that plain Linux mobile devices will replace Android some day for a significant amount of people.

@RandomHayBale Good point but you need to take into account that we're dealing with people who made their Apple choice before Google went nuts with its latest announcements - whatever they may look like in a year.I agree, that if Google really goes down that road, it's less difference to the golden Apple cage because both introduced lock-in situations.I still have some hope that Android will not lose this important property. But this will decided in future. For now, you *do* have the option of choosing GrapheneOS. Mine runs everything I personally do need including government and banking apps. My battery does not drain that fast. Therefore, I can't follow on your negative arguments on GOS at the moment. Maybe your requirements (apps) differ too much.

@GeorgWeissenbacher Well, if people don't care, this whole discussion does not relate to them. So we should not care about those people. 🤷 Android: let's see how that goes. If they really follow that path, the community hopefully will find its way.Otherwise, the differences between those two golden cages will get less.

@RandomHayBale I can absolutely follow your rationale here. However, to me, it's still - by far - the best current solution out there and therefore I don't see any issue with recommendations. Everything else is a step back with respect to security and privacy which I would not recommend. Therefore, let's enjoy while its last and recommend it.YMMV.

@yacc143 @publicvoit I don't think there's anything definitive for custom operating systems like GrapheneOS. Nobody really knows how changes will percolate into the AOSP.

@hydrowalrus @publicvoit Ah, but:- our friends have already made the releases of the device trees for the newest Pixels into AOSP restricted.- and yes, probably on Graphene OS and others you'll be able to install APKs signed with keys that are not signed with the Google's key to rule them all, but how big is that community versus the whole Android world?

@yacc143 @hydrowalrus If it is true that GOS will be able to continue current releases and (security) fixes at the same time as allowing 3rd party APKs to be installed, I can think of scenarios where the GOS community will grow at a high rate as there are less alternatives.Time will tell. We all can't know yet what Google is actually going to change.

@publicvoit @hydrowalrus I'm sure Google & Co will be happy with GOS & Co growing dramatically.GOS has this critical vulnerability that their genius ā€œproductā€ depends completely on deliveries from a more and more hostile manufacturer. But yes, no one can tell what the future will bring.

@yacc143 @publicvoit Definitely not a great outlook... This might lead to a push to improve mobile Linux projects? But app compatibility will be a big obstacle.

@hydrowalrus @yacc143 Way too early to that. However, I might find it more plausible when there's an AOSP-fork as there is already most work public and a very large ecosystem of apps. However, I'm no expert on that subject and there might be too many things necessary for Pixel hardware support that Google might keep internal. Let's see.

@hydrowalrus @yacc143 Any Linux-phone OS needs to fully support Android APKs. I see even worse implications compared to GOS for some apps.Anyhow, with GOS thinking about partnership with a device vendor selling specific devices that meet GOS' requirements, my current bet is on the future of GOS. šŸ˜‰

@publicvoit Google is doing the same lockdown in installing apps outside the play store and they removed a bunch of if not all ICE trackers. Your indignation is just bias now. There is going to be even less daylight between the two choices folks have.Samsung are locking down the bootloader so it can’t be u unlocked by plebs … etc. So step down off the cross, we could use the wood.

@publicvoit There are plenty of valid reasons to dislike Apple (abusive SSD pricing, walled garden, "courageous" connectors, being maliciously compliant, ...). But the thing that keeps me sticking with their products is:You switch them on. They work. Out of the box. They interoperate with each other. Out of the box. Five years later, they still do.(Yes, occasionally Apple creates a dumpster fire like the recent liquid glass UI or the MacBook Pro line during Jony Ive's reign of terror. Those you have to either skip or sit out.)

@roskakori I have no idea what idea you have on non-Apple devices but that's the case of more or less anything else if you don't buy the cheapest crap on the market ... 🤷 I "maintain" some Linux devices on ancient hardware of some older ladies. I just meet them once a year for an occasional LTS upgrade and that's it. None of those devices had a 2nd hand price label above 300€.

@bitterseeds I can not follow your rationale here. Please correct me where I'm wrong:Apple doesn't allow installing apps from any source while Google does (at the moment). Ignore the rumors until we know for a fact what is going to change in future.Yes, there are crappy Android phones on the market but you're not forced to buy this crap and may choose an alternative which is way better and sometimes even cheaper. Way cheaper than Apple in any case.I clearly see a strong difference between those two ecosystems at the moment. Therefore, I'm really puzzled how you can argue like that.YMMV.

@publicvoit @roskakori for work I currently use a MacBook Air and a HP laptop with Ubuntu in parallel, and while most thinks work on Ubuntu these days, i have to agree that the MacBook experience is smoother and until now everything just works. ( I am aware that for more intense use you need to buy additional tools for Mac that are an apt install away on Ubuntu.) Personally, I still prefer Ubuntu/Debian, but its interesting to see what's out there (and I think there is no system that ticks all columns on the requirements chart).

@publicvoit Go read what I wrote again. And I know that Apple doesn’t allow installing apps outside the App Store. You assumed I didn’t know that when I said Google is locking down Android as far as this function. They are making devs register, go look at the fdroid posts about this. I said there was practically no daylight between them. I wasn’t defending apple while you seem to want to convince me Google is better. I’ve been using Android since the HTC Dream, and iPhone v1. :eyeroll:

@publicvoit I think mobile is even harder than normal computers. My main priority for my phone is the camera, esp. low light. Do you have an opinion how the Graphene app compares to Google's?Also, what map/navigation app do you use (and does it come with real-time traffic data)?
