With all the horror and Disturbance in the Force, online social crap is grossly inadequate. I severely miss cafe culture. I want and need face to face contact. I go to one of the two cafes closest to me along the LA River, it's pretty amazing and I'm lucky to have it, but it's random folks I don't know mostly. Friends are scattered about, few physically close. Online stuff to me has never been adequate. It is amazing and wonderful of course in obvious ways but it's not a coincidence that it's importance is fed with shades of our pernicious Mind vs Body christian ideology, as well as playing into insecurities and a bit of indulgence in neuro-whatever pathologies. (Not making fun of autism, I'm as off as most here, but it's no reason to not be your own weird self out in the world -- fuck you make me, as the saying goes.)We know one thing for sure, from our new fascist world: everything weve been doing to oppose it has not worked. We need new habits. Bodily in person is fundamental.

@darkuncle Absolutely. And online is augmentation, not replacement. We're organisms! lol

@tomjennings IMHO, during the lockdown times did we develop something similar to café culture online in my social circles (German CCC-adjacent), but afterwards it quickly died down again from lack of impetus and the physically scattered people attending their own local social functions again.I'm so immensely thankful to know it can in fact be made to work and long to have that kind of connection again.

@updn Interesting! Yeah there were innovations brought on by the pandemic here too, but as you observed, they went away with the pandemic peak. Maybe some academics have written it up.
