holy crap: mastodon server does not support domain name changes. 😆i now have to give some serious thought to migrating dialup.cafe -> dialup.partyit would mean setting up a new server from scratch, migrating users to the new server, and losing all of their post history in the process. i am truly dumbfounded at how bad this architecture is.#mastoAdmin

@vga256 I'm going to be "that guy" as gently as possible, and say that there are plenty of good alternatives to Mastodon itself. Pleroma, Misskey, Mitra, all good alternatives.

@prettygood @vga256 I'm the second guy, you can do a domain transfer you just have to rename everything in the db....

@dcc @vga256 @prettygood I'll be the third guy and say that Mitra supports importing user backups, something that Pleroma does not.

@phnt @dcc @vga256 @prettygood Being the fourth guy I'll mention that literally no AP software supports domain migration (aside from maybe Mitra with its nomadic identities), and doing such a migration yourself would just result in other servers treating it as a brand new server.

@prettygood And those support a server completely upending its domain to a different one? The domain is pretty important in ActivityPub. It's like...half of it actually.

@shanie you probably can't see the other post in the thread, but its from someone more knowledgeable than I.>literally no AP software supports domain migration (aside from maybe Mitra with its nomadic identities), and doing such a migration yourself would just result in other servers treating it as a brand new server.
