Oh yeah, I got reminded of that time that I stumbled onto a store with a light bulb tester. All these sockets are live at 120v.

@foone This doesn’t look like Sunlan in NE Portland (Oregon), but that’s a great shop, too. And you can test any bulb. 😅

@pndc I don't think that'd really help much. if you stick your finger into a socket you bridge both contacts through it

fun fact: I know exactly what it feels like to get 120v through your fingertips.is this because of my lifelong amateur electronics interest? nope! shitty landlord mounted ceiling track lighting on a wall above a bed, and I woke up and reached up and ZAP.

@foone yeah construction stores of my youth all had something like that (aside from using a less whimsical voltage than 120 V). These days, if they do, they have a two-buttons-an-arm's-length-apart activation.

@funkylab @foone These days? You still have incandescent lamps in the US? In europe we've moved on to LEDs.And back in the days with incandescent lamps, shops used battery lamp testers with a buzzer, basically just a continuity tester.

@1000millimeter @funkylab in america it seems that any new lighting source you buy is LED, but older lamps have incandescent sockets with LED bulbs in them. Most people still have a mix of LED-bulbs and integral-LED sources, unless they're in a newish house with newish furniture.

@foone @funkylab Sorry I was talking about LED bulbs. I prefer them over integral LED lamps because you can replace the LED buln rather then throwing away the whole lamp.I was just wondering that you have testers, haven't seen necessity for testing LEDs in the shop

@foone This one time I was in Poland as a guest of an SF convention and needed to get a new room at 1am because it was raining heavily and the ceiling lights were flickering and flashing despite being switched off. And also, there were barenaked copper mains wires protruding from the wall ...

@foone I once broke a lightbulb trying to unscrew it, pulled the plug, and stuck some pliers in to get the base. I pulled the wrong plug. Ok, not once, twice, and once was in Europe. 120v is uncomfortable. 240 hurts. My current (lol) policy is to take an object to a different room to fix it.

@foone gotta love the kill-a-watt hooked up there too like, we can't be bothered to install a momentary switch for when this is actually in use so we have to make sure no one is abusing their lightbulb testing privileges!!
