@neil > Does everything really need to be an Internet-accessible, third party service?Yes, because when you're the nursery that buys a service such as this, presumably it reduces your own exposure?Yes, this provider got hacked. But how quickly do you think the same thing would have happened if the nursery were running their own system to provide the same functionality?

You're implying this is just one nursery. And no, it couldn't be hacked if they were running their own system, because they wouldn't connect that system to the focking InternetCC: @neil@mastodon.neilzone.co.uk

@cy @neil no, it's a nursery chain with multiple branches? I didn't word my initial statement well, but I was referring to the whole chain. So in the absence of anyone who knows better, since tech is not the primary skill of educational staff, I personally feel like this would have happened even quicker if this wasn't outsourced. Because it would have almost certainly been shared across those branches _somehow_.

So it wasn't outsourced. The company was the nursery chain, doing accounting for only them and no one else. That's a great argument against franchises, but it's definitely not as bad as my medical records, which get sent to some giant corp collecting all medical records of all hospitals everywhere ever.CC: @neil@mastodon.neilzone.co.uk
