       I just explained to middle school students the meaning of “get in the zone” and how in the 90s everything was “xtreme” and now I feel old. These days you “lock in” and everything is “based” (based on what?)Why would lockdown traumatized kids want to “lock in?”

       @futurebird Surely you can choose your basis, as long as it's linearly independent?

       @futurebird I took it to mean a variation of “lock on target”. I.e. get focused, set your strategy in place, and go for it.(Says 48yr old me trying to understand my 14yr old child)

       @futurebird Heh. I'm reminded of MST3K's takedown of "xtreme"-ing everything. 😄 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JePOUmbkixA

       @futurebird Betcha right wingers think they're gaining something if teenagers use "based" and a version of "lock and load".Too bad.Kids will run with it and make it unintelligible to 'em.

       @futurebird presumably for the same reason they would want you to let them cook, but not be cooked

       @futurebird it's funny that based was originally a reference to freebase cocaine and none of the right-wingers who use it know this

       @futurebird "based" comes down to "on crack" (i.e. freebase cocaine), doesn't it? To be based is to be impulsive, decisive, to not GAF in the way that a crackhead supposedly DGAF.At least, that's where I understood the term to come from.

       @futurebird whats funny to me is that 'based' is not new. (as others are noting)we were using it liberally on the forum i used to moderate way back in the aughtsi feel like 'on fleek' (anyone remember that?) kinda died out thoas for lock in, that sounds like something that came from a video game 😂

       @futurebird Isn't "lock in" a game show thing to indicate you've committed to your choice?

       @futurebird My guess is "lock in" involves *focus* as in "lock in on a target" and may come from video games. Based appears to be an instance of reclaiming an insult https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/based

       @futurebird presumably locking in is the same as getting in the zone - an engaged flow statebased is from Lil B, The Based God, it's a broadly positive term to describe something or someone that's openly self-expressive and aware, generally rooted in positivity and goodness or quality, the polar opposite of cringe.
