@pwm I am almost compelled enough to put in significant effort to do a large writeup on my experiences with android and the difficulties I've encountered with attempting to use it in a social context (especially the FOSS versions of android). The only option left is graphene, which is likely too hardcore for me and god knows how long they'll be able to keep it up now that google is actively adversarial. Pixels are the only devices with decent security so now you're just walking around with an unlocked bootloader if you go with an alt.

@wertimer @eric @pwm lyft has given me the least issues of any of the apps but I have had issues with QR code scanning in relation to lyft. There's also an issue where if I close the lyft app it seems to no longer give me proper notifications. Other apps work in this regard and I've checked that background usage is allowed so I have no idea what's up.

@sneeden @pwm @Tsuki There's a couple of things about that. I do not have DIRECT experience using stock android recently, but1) stock android is miserable. Whatever carrier you get it from is buttfucked with constant ads and it's got 1000x more spyware than you think it does. With side loading going away, I don't see why it's an option you'd choose now at all. 2) even with stock the apps tend to not work as well anyways. This aligns with my previous experience of just having more hitches in general.3) One experience I had when I was failing to be able to use a laundromat because of my phone, I thought the issue was my retard FOSS phone but I was told by someone that NOBODY with android was able to pay. This was a place where very few people had android so it tracked that nobody checked it.

Every one of these applications accepts an android version, but for various reasons (that are all googles and independent developers fault as far as I can tell), it does not work as well and on a custom ROM it does not work work at all due to play integrity.As established, if you can't run a custom ROM, you're just running a worse version of iOS anyway for the same price.

I've had cheap ones before and it's a pretty significant barrier for a lot of applications just due to the speed and reliability. The responsiveness of the device is not as important as, say, on a work PC... but when you need it to be responsive you REALLY need it to be responsive RIGHT NOW Not only that but I do care about security for peace of mind. AFAIK pixels are the only android devices with a security chip that's worth a shit.

Including the rolling one for workspace switching. Android animations just completely suck and I would have turned them off in developer settings if it didn't break spinners. The issue I usually have is when they get in my way. If they don't, I don't really care that they are there.

Win11 animations cause significant problems in terms of system responsiveness and using a weird amount of computational resources. The animations on win10 and gnome never cause any issues for me and I appreciate them being there

Or daring to open KF.As for the difference between graphene and iOS, my options are:1. either buy another chinesium phone that spies on me in multiple ways plus Google and loose updates 2 years after purchase2. buy a Pixel and live with the possibility that Google might say fuck you 2 years after I by it and loose updates, and live with the possibility that installing foss replacements on the phone will become next to impossible (basically all apps I use)3. buy an iPhone for the same price as Pixel and get spied on less than chinesium phones and get at least 5 years of updates guaranteed. Coupled with Pixels not really having quality hardware that lasts long (approx the same as Apple), this has become a real option that isn't that insane. If I won't have the ability to install my foss apps, Android has no use case for me.
