I am very normal about ants and think about them a very normal amount. Just so you know, OK?

Really, what someone should look into is those of you who don't think about ants enough. That's the thing that needs to be investigated.

@futurebird Normal dude compelled to think about ants in a quantity considered normal by @futurebird ..."How would a soldier ant wear a Roman centurion's helmet with plume and scale mail? Would the Roman empire have fallen if it were organized along the lines of an ant colony instead of a corrupt personalist regime?"

@futurebird Clearly, the non-specialist only knows about Lasius ants, perhaps also about fire ants. They wouldn't know about desert ants, army ants, Dracula ants, marauder ants, or any of the guests that live alongside them within ant nests, but they would of course know Lasius and a couple other genera ... After all, this is all just common knowledge.https://xkcd.com/2501/

@futurebird I mean with the whole ants cloning males of another species thing, there is no abnormal amount of thinking about ants. Like WTF!

@futurebird A normal amount for someone keeping several ant colonies in their home, at least. Everyone needs a hobby.

@agturcz This varies a lot by species. Some ants are even *more* active in cooler months than in the summer, although this isn't typical. From watching captive carpenter ants (pets) I've noticed that they shut things down around the first week of September...Some ants change the concentration of the various metabolites in the haemolymph (bug blood) to better endure cold. This is part of a hibernation-like state called "diapause."But it's hard to say more without know the species.
