man when people were telling me that smart TVs are a privacy nightmare, I thought that was because they recorded what you watched using their built in media-player OS.NOPE! Apparently Roku TV's will give you popups based on what DVDs you're watching through them, because they screenshot the HDMI-in and compare it to a database. that's a few steps creepier than I was expecting from a garden variety privacy invasion

we've got one "smart" TV in the house and it's not using its internal smartness, we have it hooked up to a apple TV. but now I gotta go dig in the options and see if I have to turn off "SCREENSHOT ALL OUR CONTENT AND MAIL IT TO A SERVER"

@foone ... does it use fqdns and DNS so that a po.hole can block the shit out of it, or does it use hard coded ips so that a pfsense can redirect all GET and POST requests to a /dev/null -> http://503 ?

@foone its not a particularly surprising point given the state of *everything* but i do still feel like pointing out the hypocrisy of HDCP controlling where you send an hdmi signal to make sure nothing gets recorded as if anyone would want to do that instead of ripping it directly, streaming services blacking out when you take a screenshot...but for spying purposes that stuff is apparently super duper okie dokie

@foone @baishen @otte_homan I still manage to block Roku ads using PiHole - but I also block the ability to reach any other DNS endpoints but the ones I provide. Roku absolutely will try to reach out to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. I would think if Roku were using DoH I would have seen this by now. Not saying you're wrong - but I cannot find any indication of DoH in the Roku's I herd at home. I'm glad, too. DoH is a pain to block.

@foone Yeah, modern TVs can't be allowed to connect online. If one wants a Roku or other such streaming device, it has to be external. (Which still means lots of tracking and such, but at least it can't see everything else you're doing.)

@foone a while back we got a smart TV, as it was the only affordable one in the size we needed. I refused to give it any form of access, and only used external devices & dongles with it.A year later Samsung responded to a factory robbery of that model of TV by remotely bricking all the stolen TVs.My wife originally had thought me vigilant rather than paranoid, but after Samsung took action she downgraded me to just normally cautious.

@ireneista @foone We should expect that its just a matter of few years until all your devices (and your neighbours as well) are forming a mesh network independ of any user settings, and use any available device as bridge to the internet

@crazy_pony @ireneista eh, I suspect they're gonna start sticking sims in them to just talk to a mobile network

@cinnamon I guess! I figure they're getting away with it because they're the TV here, they kinda have to un-DRM it in order to display anything in the first place

@foone I refuse to buy a tv smart enough to need an internet connection.I will *never* hook up my tv to the internet, nor my desktop screen, nor my car, nor my solar inverters, nor my home cleaning activities, nor my doorbell or security cameras. If any of these devices comes with a sim, I will remove it. I don't care if it degrades it and I could e.g warm up my car with an app. it's an entirely unnecessary backdoor into my life that I just don't care enough about to keep around.

@foone how difficult it is to just attach to the display controller and bypass all of the smart TV bullshit

@foone Endlessly adorbz, these pretenses at being able to disable the snoop 'features'. Some of them really look authentic!
