Can someone explain to me why multiple world leaders respond to the random things Candice Owens says on her strange little show?Do they not understand that to engage with her is to raise her profile?She's having a moment and becoming one of the most important voices in conservative media. I don't even like to talk about her because controversy is her O2. But at this point with all these presidents and so on addressing what's she's said I don't think that matters much. Rumors that are beneath even denial. To take the time to deny them give them credit.

I keep making posts like this then realizing that for people not in the US, or those who don't follow politics in the US probably too much it must be very confusing. Here is the context. Candice Owens is a right wing "commentator" with ties to TPUSA (where Charlie Kirk, the guy who was murdered worked) but she is more famous for working with Ben Shapiro of the conservative "Daily Wire" Candice left the Daily Wire since she didn't agree with them about Israel. 1/

There is a rift on the right and it's mostly over two issues: Epstein and Israel. The Qannon-adjacent crowd: Alex Jones, Candice Owens, Tucker Carlson is (sort of) against foreign intervention or really even US participation in wars and weapons. They sometimes seduce people on the anti-war left because of this. But, it's NOT about being anti-war in that general sense for these folks. The more "mainline" conservatives who think the US army and weapons should be everywhere.

Kirk was unique in that both of these groups liked him. He found a balance by leaning into "Christian Values" consistently throwing out red meat for racists and bigots and being VERY CAREFUL what he said about foreign policy. They are squabbling to claim his legacy for their sides. It's very ugly.

In the past week Candice Owens has been getting millions of views. She thinks that Kirk was "taken out" by Israel. (She says this.) She thinks it's a big conspiracy and the shooter is a pasty. They are even trying to make up second shooters. She also thinks the wife of Emmanuel Macron is a secret trans woman. Both Macron and Benjamin Netanyahu have responded to these accusations and THAT is what I find absolutely wild. Why respond? 4/

When looking at this kind of stuff please remember that conspiracies ALWAYS contain bits of truth. But conspiracies are fundamentally stories that try to make the world make more sense to the people who create them. When bad things happen it must be the fault of "enemies" ... it can't be that the world is complex and chaotic. It can't be the result of systemic issues we've ignored. It needs to be a whole STORY. I don't enjoy any of this. God help us all. 5/5

@FediThing That's a great question. In some cases I think they are very cynical and know they are lying to people and leading them astray. However, when these kinds of people become very popular it's often because they have come to a point of believing in their own nonsense. They seem to their followers have the authenticity that's so absent from other political media.

@FediThing In the end it doesn't matter if they are honest or not, we still live with the chaos. And worse with the helplessness that this world view inspires.Because that's the thing about these theories. They explain "how the world really works" the shadowy forces that control it and at the same time make it clear that each of us is too small and powerless to do anything to change it. This isn't true.

Bu more seriously I think people like Tucker Carlson with connections to wealth and power understand this fact and do isolationism as cosplay— part of this world view also says that ordinary people can do nothing significant to stop these forces— so his money and friends are in now real danger. In fact if enough people are distracted away from practical effective resistance such as forming unions it helps him.

@futurebird @FediThing I think there's a real danger of the opposition falling into the conspiracy mindset. We do need to keep our wits about us if only to keep from getting too discouraged.There are real conspiracies in the world, but conspiracy theorists bat basically zero at finding them and distinguishing them from delusions.Jeffrey Epstein is an amazing example of this. This guy was really sexually trafficking minors to the elite, and had his own island like a James Bond villain, and QAnon, which claimed to be exactly concerned with this kind of thing, was going on about Comet Ping Pong and harvesting adrenochrome. And even after he dies under questionable circumstances all they can do is try to figure out how Hillary Clinton killed him. Because their conclusions always come first and the investigation afterward.
