the weird thing is that while microsoft has gotten civilization-endingly stupid over "AI", they've gotten way better in other areas. Visual Studio Code? A very powerful and well supported Sublime Text clone! WSL makes windows better as a development environment than its ever been. they're open sourcing stuff for the first time.I guess there's some kind of balance of terribleness that they have to maintain, so as they got better in some areas, they had to get worse in others.

@foone they're going to ruin all of that by putting AI in it (it's already started a bit with VSC)

@typhon yeah that's the thing! it's like there's someone going NOW WAIT, WE CAN'T DO SOMETHING GOOD, THAT'S NOT THE MICROSOFT WAY!

@foone .NET (neé .NET Core) is legitimately cool! When they're not busy ruining it with absolutely boneheaded approaches to telemetry, documentation, governance, or just about any other part of the project.

@foone Or they do a calculated amount of good, to keep their karma just this side of the c-suite being guillotined. Roll out Recall, then fix vscode bugs until the mob puts down their torches and pitchforks. Now Windows 11 requires the heart blood of your firstborn to log in, but they also released qbasic.exe for Linux, so who's to say if they're really good or bad.

@annarcana I get what you mean, but "a push to try to win back developers" is just giving me "DEVELOPERS! DEVELOPERS! DEVELOPERS!" flashbacks

@foone I've always said the last good things MS ever did were Win98 SP2, and standardizing the mouse to int 3

@foone My impression is that the developer division can more or less stop caring about vendor lock-in to Windows because now all the money is in cloud services, not OS licenses. It is funny to see .NET advertised as both "open source" and "20+ years", which is technically true in combination but just not what they call ".NET" today.

@foone I do wonder how they managed to get a blanket "disable all AI please" button into VS Code, though.

@foone Yeah, it's from last month's release. They snuck it into the release notes about halfway down after 5 billion AI features.https://code.visualstudio.com/updates/v1_104#_hide-and-disable-github-copilot-ai-features

@foone Love the take of VS Code as a Sublime Text clone. Yeah, thinking about it that's very close 🤭🤣Makes me feel even better about sticking with Sublime Text over it though 😇

@cybergwen it's more accurate to say it's an atom clone, and atom is a sublime clone, but yeah
