Contex:"The Majority Report" is a left wing podcast in NYC that has been around for decades. They support democrats but will criticize them. It's also very funny. Every teacher listens to it. A "tankie" is a pejorative term for a left-wing person who like authoritarian communism unironically with ... tanks. Really only found online.

@futurebird the Majority Report is definitely not full of tankies. I'm surprised that someone would simultaneously know the term "tankies" and know the majority report and also call the majority report that.

@quinn When I looked into them, I first read that in order to bring about a communist revolution, you do need to figure out how to mass-produce tanks (it would be drones today but the sentiment stays) in order to fight off the inevitable invasion by capitalist countries.It does make some sort of sense to me and also explains some of the withdrawal into authoritarianism most communist countries experienced, as they were under assault both from economic sanctions, military posturing and foreign destabilizing agents eroding internal trust.But then like you said some of them start to uncritically praise Stalin/Mao/Kim and they lost me.@futurebird

@futurebird I was told "tankies" came from what happened in Hungary & Czechoslovakia in the '50s & '60s - if a fellow Communist varies from the Moscow Party Line, "send in the tanks".
