Starting today I'm going to become more aggressive about supporting independent media and journalism. I'm not wealthy enough to make a big difference on my own but I think this is something that could have an impact if enough people with a little handful of disposable income and deep concerns about the state of journalism took on as a more serious value. Are you paying Disney every month? youTube? Think about the impact of that going to a 20-something journalist instead.

Specifically over the next six months I will spend $500 on "better media" I will focus on individuals and give more to those with the least reach. I have $500 because I stopped using amazon and canceled all my streaming services. It's my entertainment budget (not counting books, we will NOT discuss the book budget.)Maybe your number is $50. Maybe it's $5000 ... maybe it is $5Make the work pay.The satisfaction of telling the truth can't be eaten for dinner.

@futurebird I’m with you! The only streaming media I pay for (and for several years) is MLB.tv (baseball). That’s it. I also have print subscriptions to The Atlantic, and our weekly county newspaper.

I've thought about this a lot and I've thought about making lists of good people to support. But, I keep rejecting this idea because the power of this kind of support is that it can be real, real grassroots organic.Support the people you actually spend time listening to. Help them reject advertising and money that comes with strings attached. Give more and give more often to people no one but you has heard of.

I've seen attempts to make lists and having little "funding groups" go astray too often. Our differences in opinion are so important, and this is about integrating supporting content into the way that you interact with it whenever you are dealing with content that's really teaching you something new. So there will be no lists from me. But, if you are able to help you should. If you can't do this don't worry about it!

@futurebird This! Thank you. Last year we shifted most of our charitable giving to media orgs like ProPublica, the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), EFF, the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, the Free Law Project, Archive.org, and a bunch of individual local news orgs.

@futurebird I've also been thinking about this. I am going to take 1% of my after tax income and see how to split that into a maximum of 3 monthly donations to organisations working for the social good. The others I can still support with once off donations when possible.

@futurebird @briankrebs we should rally around a new decentralized media ecosystem. key would be being able to pay all creators directly and automatically for the time we spend with their work as a percentage of all the money we can afford for that per month. I call it #PublicPatron.it will first require #WebMonetization, which is what's needed to make the fedi sustainable. a protocol for bank to bank transfers. cause fuck crypto.

@futurebird There's probably still a worthwhile place for sharing journalists and outlets you've found doing good work - it'll help other people find them as wellBecause the only things that are easy to discover on the internet these days have an ad budget behind them.

@futurebird I think every lil bit helps. I'll give $100 to Guardian, ProPublic, and Wikipedia each every year. Even if half the country gave $5 that would be close to $1 bill. It's always been my petpeeve. People complain about media being biased but of course because they are a business. When it comes to donating towards independent journalists same people are nowhere to be found.

@futurebird Yeah, I started doing this about a year and a half ago. Set a budget, picked the people or news orgs I wanted to support and got paid subscriptions. One of the conflicts I kept running up against was that many of the independent writers whose work I wanted to support are on substack, which I do not want to support. In some cases, if you write the person directly, they will give you some other way of sending them money so that Substack doesn't get a cut.

@futurebird How to monetize journalism is such a fundamental problem to ponder. What we do know is that the advertiser pays model is broken and subject to manipulation.

@futurebird I’ve never paid for news and often have avoided political news like the plague until recently, when I started supporting Tangle. In addition to perspectives spanning US political leanings, they include opinions from people and places directly impacted by events, plus news “on the bright side,” and they’re incredibly transparent, own up to mistakes, and are truly about thoughtful, reasoned discussion.https://www.readtangle.com/

@futurebird You can apply this to everything you know. We've been letting the big ones take everything over for a long time now. I've tried to combat it with my own way of living for a while but it's a fucking pain in the ass and getting worse so I kinda gave up. Just got me made fun of most the time anyway.People COULD make a difference but until now have shown very little interest in doing so. Would rather the convenience and don't want to miss out on the fun.

@futurebird A few years ago we moved away from keeping our streamers “always-on” to only getting a month of each one, spread out throughout the year. It’s saved us many hundreds of dollars so far and we still get to watch whatever we’re interested in, just on a delayed basis in some cases. I highly recommend this approach to anyone unhappy with their preferred streaming services.

@futurebird If one stops giving money to all those (not just Disney) on the BDS list, there is more money to give to journalists.Especially journalists in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, etc. They need money before Bibi and Trump kill them.

@futurebird Majority Report is an excellent all around progressive, morally and intellectually consistent news commentary outfit that has a lot of value. They speak with all manner of journalists, politicians and experts on their show. The stream on large platforms for free, but also have their own basic app where you can listen live and send comments to the show, if you want to avoid YT etc. Can't say enough good things about their ability to give relevant context to the news.

@futurebird My wife and I have supported a paid internship program run by our local public media station for several years now. This is one example of how those who aren’t billionaires can support independent journalism. Also, NPR accepts direct donations on its web site. The Guardian is another example of an independent journalism organization that is supported by small donations.

@NatureMC @futurebird @briankrebs yes and that's great but I bring up the above because I think we have two big problems with that in comparison to what people want.1st is that those donations involve a third party which I think deters lots of people, especially those of us who value decentralization. we need a protocol for fiat transfer.2nd is social media virality means we're consuming media from too many sources to support them all. we need to be able to affordably support what we find.
