They want us to be like outdoor cats. Such a good analogy. Outdoor cats have less chronic disease and obesity than indoor cats. So is there "something" about "nature" that's good for cats?Outdoor cats only live for 3 years, indoor cats? live for 10 years or more. **Outdoor cats don't live long enough to get chronic disease.**And there is even that kernel of truth in the grift. Indoor cats don't get enough exercise. TRUE! Processes cat food isn't as nutritious.

Even down to concerns about things like screen time. I'm certain going outside is better for the "cat brain" than staying in. The stimulation and activity is something indoor cats need more of. But the solution isn't to throw away all of the basic guard rails that have expanded human life expectancy and health by destroying the public health system. The solution is to build a catio.

@futurebirdThis 17 years old fella recommends regular walkies, in between cosy indoors with specially engineered food that is easier on his aging kidneys.

@futurebird A vet at a talk recommended feeding cats by letting loose 30 mice a day into your house. Nutritious and lots of pouncing. My 16 year old wouldn’t last a day in the wild up until 2 years ago he was an indoor cat and 16 pounds of muscle. Now he has a brain tumor, lost most of his teeth, and is losing muscle. We care for him and do what we can to make him happy.

@futurebird And/or walk you cats outside. Current cats and most previous cats loved it. One was to timid and would fight hard to get back inside.

@futurebird the biggest threat to outdoor cats (and many other creatures) is motor traffic, and a lack of effective traffic calming and speed enforcement in suburban areas. Until recently it was more common in UK for cats to be semi outdoor although catios are becoming more popular, especially in outer suburbs/semi rural areas where there is more speeding (in urban areas cars parked on either side of the road and traffic calming measures often prevent this).Last night I saw 4 fox cubs and 1 cat outside, and these creatures often use the pedestrian refuges and even the zebra crossing exactly like humans (so if you drive carefully they all remain safe)

@futurebird I heard a discussion a while back about outdoor cats having less autoimmune disease than indoor cats.Much of that is the outdoor cats dying before they develop whatever disease. But another part of it is their being way more likely to be infected by worms which suppress their host's immune system.So. Yeah.

@futurebird Your numbers are off. Average life span for an outside cat is 5 years. Inside cats average 16-18 years and some live into their 20s. I've lost several of each and my experience matches these reported averages. (Bonus photos of my community cat who is over 9 and my senior inside cat who is 18.)
