Pretty wild how your phone doesn't actually belong to you even after you're done paying for it. No, parts of it belong to Samsung or Motorola, much of it belongs to Google/Alphabet, part of it belongs to Qualcom, but almost none of it really belongs to you. You don't get to decide who your phone sends data to or how. You don't get to look inside and see how it works, because all the things that make it work are contained in opaque containers built by evil electron wizards.

And your computer? The same. Filled with metaphorical black boxes you're not allowed to know the contents of, and that you never WILL know the contents of unless you have a very specific education and access to an electron microscope and a lot of funding.

@vadhakara@mastodon.social see, that's why I run Linuxmost of it I can check the source of and audit as much as I can, but of course I probably won't bother doing that because I know, much like Wikipedia, that any edit of the code comprising my system has been under enough eyes you can reasonably sure it's going to be okayof course there's one flagrant exception: your web browser

@yuki Don't even get me started on the HTML standard and the ridiculous feature creep that has ruined the internet! But no, actually I'm talking about hardware and firmware black boxes. Stuff inside your processor, your bridge chips, your RAM, and most concerningly the radio and GPS chips in your mobile phone, that you can't know about because they have hidden it deliberately, and that is not at all under the control of your OS or yourself. Could be anything at all in there.
