You know, backups aren’t really THAT necessary. What could *actually* go wrong, honestly? Sure someone’s drive failed that one time but has it ever actually happened to you? What are the odds of an ENTIRE DRIVE just not working all at once? Just order a new one if you think it seems flakey someday and then copy things if you want.Probably no reason to keep most of this stuff anyway. How important could it be?Big Data has been playing us for fools.

@NanoRaptor@bitbang.social on one hand, I am absolutely this person and kind of just laugh and reinstall things when stuff breaks or crasheson the other hand I am also doing regular backups and don't need to care if I somehow have to dig up data from 4 years ago for some reason (I never do) lol

@NanoRaptor I have at one point in time come to a server room and been greeted by what sounded like a table saw. It looked like this:

@NanoRaptor archivist here :blobwave: the cognitive stress of complex backup setups is high. ive done 3-2-1 strategy for 17 years and guess what? never lost data. not because of the backup system. but because my machine alerted me to errors, added a drive, copied over before the drive died. so this is to say that i don't really need a backup system. and if i lost it all (my area of research is very obscure) id probably feel lighter and find something else to research. many computer users act as if their isos and pr0n are going onto a glacial arc for future generations. life is too short to get this worked up.
