hah. looking at mastodon on a CRT, and it triggered the "your screen is so small, it must be a phone!" styling

@xerz yeah, if this was designed back in the 90s or early 2000s, it'd be WAY denser.

@foone i think this must be the font size, mastodon actually has a separate ~4:3 layout in between the mobile and widescreen layouts

@foone I wonder if it's possible to do the actual math on how big the text is on screen just from CSSthere's one problem in that the pixel density is assumed to be 1 for displays without support for this data, but that's obviously wrong for older displays

@efi yeah I can guarantee that windows 11 doesn't know the pixel density of this external EDID-less CRT

@foone The magic of VGA.I don't like how desktop apps and websites are starting to require a 1280x720 canvas in order to be displayed properly, meaning that FHD screens (or QHD with a 150% scaling) fall short if the user wants to display 4 windows simultaneously. VGA resolution (640x480) should still be the minimal target.

@foone 768px is a very common breakpoint, below that is mobile, above is a table or computer layout.Frequent annoyance with the last couple iPad Minis as they moved from being 768 points to 744…
