Thinking about how the political possibility of free Black people led to US states seceding and willing to fight a civil war over it, but the political actuality of fascism isn't even rousing US states to consider maybe thinking of dangling vague threats of secession. And that is because liberal politicians are a ruling elite and would rather be a part of fascism than risk a better world for the masses.

@theynege > liberal politicians are a ruling elite and would rather be a part of fascism than risk a better world for the massesUltimately, the problem is that they're not liberals, they're *neoliberals*; conservatives who use liberal-sounding rhetoric to keep the rabble onside. There are neoliberals on both sides of the aisle. Although on the right they tend to exploit a different set of "classical" liberal values for their reputation laundering (free markets, free speech, etc).(1/2)

I am an average Canadian with an average Canadian level of knowledge of US history, so take this oversimplification with a grain of salt, but, you know, sometimes the salt is right.

@theynege I agree 100% with your ultimate point though. Because neoliberal politicians are capitalists(1), they'll sit back and enable fascists as a hedge against any kind post-capitalist push, from left or right, however democratic and practically effective it might appear to be.(1)Even if they don't own much capital themselves, they're absurdly pro-capitalist)(2/2)

@strypey @theynege There is no economic split between red and blue neoliberalsThere was a wedge between enslavers (who stood to lose trillions in today’s money on emancipation), and those with money invested elsewhere If Fascists were the only ones invested in AI and crypto and ICE, then we might have a civil war
