The move, announced by fellow co-founder Ben Cohen on social media early Wednesday, follows years of mounting tensions between #Unilever, which acquired the ice cream company in 2000, & the Ben & Jerry’s founders, who have long been outspoken on social issues. The relationship especially deteriorated since the start of the #war in #Gaza.#BenAndJerrys

In the statement, Mr. Greenfield said he could no longer “in good conscience” remain at the company he helped start in 1978.Mr. Greenfield said that the “independence to pursue our values” that had been guaranteed for Ben & Jerry’s when it merged with Unilever in 2000 had been lost. “Ben & Jerry’s has been silenced, sidelined for fear of upsetting those in power,” he added.#BenAndJerrys

Under the acquisition deal, #Unilever agreed to let #BenAndJerrys maintain an #independent board to oversee the brand, allowing Ben & Jerry’s to place “guardrails” around its social #activism & giving its founders continued control of the company. For over 20 years, the company was able to speak out on issues it cared about, Mr. Greenfield wrote. But, he added, “It’s profoundly disappointing to come to the conclusion that that #independence, the very basis of our sale to Unilever, is gone.”

@Nonilex What is the period of their non-compete clause in the sell out contract, one wonders.Sounds like they should start a Jerry & Ben's or a Cohen & Greenfield ice cream shop.

@Nonilex "But, he added, “It’s profoundly disappointing to come to the conclusion that that #independence, the very basis of our sale to Unilever, is gone.”"How many times do we need to go through this?Edit:"But, he added, I never imagined for one second that the leopard would eat *my* face..."

@Nonilex Not sure how they didn't think this wouldn't happen when they signed a deal with a megaconglomerate.

@Nonilex Jerry after 25 years of profiting from being owned by Unilever suddenly notices he is just a paid employee and doesn't actually matter to them.

@Nonilex It is always the cost of a take-over. Eventually, and somehow. You have to pay the piper. Investors need to protect their investment. And I know it can be very hard. That business - independent business - can be tough. But if you sell, you sell.

@Nonilex A "well, d'uh!" moment. To go with all the others.I will grant them some leeway, seeing as how the sale happened in 2000, and the cancerous, parasitic nature of congloms was not as all-devouring as it is now.But I would say that, since 2010 at the very latest, anyone selling to a major conglomerate or to private equity has to know exactly what's going to happen.

@Nonilex we buy ben & jerry's vegan ice cream religiously. For many years. It has been the kids special treats, our special treats, for as long as I can remember. We wont touch unilever products, and if ben & jerry's continues to be sold by unilever, we will stop buying ben & jerry's. There are a million reasons for general action in the country today, and buying less ice cream or any nonessential is part of that strike anyway.
