It's taken me way to long to understand that there are people who find the phrase "post sacristy" not utopian, not exciting, not as an end to a toothache but rather they regard it with pure horror because the only thing they care about is controlling other people, and they recognize this will make that much harder. Then there are people who feel the same way, but they see it as a challenge they can rise to through other means. I don't know which one scares me more.

@futurebird I always wonder if people who don't find "post scarcity" exciting and utopian are people who lack the ability to feel a fullness/enoughness or if it's more like stuffing yourself on purpose hoping to see how much you can take (like a world record for longest nails). There are these perfect days I've had when I've felt that fullness and I've always thought that's what post scarcity would feel like.

@clarablackink But, when you dig in that's kind of the "tell" for what I'm talking about. These people are just "concerned" that "some people" won't have purpose in their lives. But if you ask if they'd be OK and still have a purpose they say "yeah"... but you know, those other people might not be able to handle it.

@futurebird Ah, I see what you mean.I dunno, I think your purpose in life is something that comes from inside from developing your understanding of yourself and the world as you see what resonates with you. No amount of whipping truly creates that purpose, it just makes for extremist survival conditions and we've got the natural world for that cruelty. Also, I dislike people who think like that. They're shitty company besides all the other stuff.

@futurebird Yesterday I saw a hacker news post titled "The Culture novels as a dystopia", and I remembered this toot. It's a common mindset, it seems.
