@regehr @ricci For my first job in high school my boss wanted me to write a web app using Perl’s CGI module. It was outdated back in 2012 and it’s even more of a horrific choice now, but I feel like I learned some important things that kids these days with their Flask and Rails and whatever.js miss out on.So, 10/10 good parenting here. Write those web pages the way ARPANET intended.

@ricci I tried learning angular once because work wanted me to. After 2 weeks I got nowhere, and thankfully the project went a different direction so I dropped it.After that I purposely avoided learning any of them because I never wanted to be asked to work with them again.

@ricci Yeah, here I am writing CGI because doing it in well JS means learning so much dom modification while doing it in CGI is just generate whole from scratch as I was doing in 1997 but now with a modicum of CSS and no <table>s

@ricci @kiwiWolle May I suggest a more nuanced view?Have you seen Signal on desktop?Have you seen DeltaChat (I feel they too)?Have you noticed that standards for web in mid 2010s absorbed helpful to developer patterns, used by JQuery, cause without it is more drudgedry for developer?Have you took a mirror to all those users, asking for features? What open source developer should do?And, since this is about popular comment, show me your library, you've created for those at the front line.

@ricci There was a comment of someone in kernel space, or may be even Linus, but comment from 15+ years ago. The gist was as follows: dealing with user facing, front end, different inputs -- all this is far more difficult and annoying than doing kernel, as there you define and control everything.To me this reminds:- it is way easier to be theoretical physicist in gravity+quantum than an engineer. I know personally.- we, theoreticians have failed to give proper QR mental model. Very similar.
