Huh. Some YouTuber says that Firefly used models instead of CGI? And that the model is shown off at scifi cons?

@uliwitness that doesn't feel right...Wikipedia seems to suggest there was a model made and used just for the crash sequence in the movie but never in the TV show: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serenity_%28Firefly_vessel%29

@bigzaphod> Some YouTuber says that Firefly used models instead of CGI? I can't confirm either way, but it's far from inconceivable that they did use models. Using digital effects for space shots in sci fi TV only began with ST:TNG in the late 1990s, and would have taken a while to ripple out through the industry. Firefly was produced by pre-Disney Fox, who were pretty old school (which is why they canned it), and could well have still been using models in the early noughties.@uliwitness

@strypey @uliwitness well no one said it was inconceivable, but that Wikipedia article has citations that they used CG for the exterior shots in the show. Also, speaking of effects in TV history, Babylon 5 was virtually all CG and it started production around 1993 whereas Firefly production wasn't until 8-9 years later in early 2000s.Of course I have no first-hand knowledge of this either.

@bigzaphod> Babylon 5 was virtually all CG and it started production around 1993Have you rewatched Babylon 5 recently? The CG has not aged well. Modern in-game graphics are still far from photorealistic, but they look *much* better.TNG's spaceship have aged better, but the models in the first couple of seasons look better. Firefly may have used a combination of techniques, as the best FX shops do.@uliwitness
