Yet the tragedy of our age is that leftist radicalism seems only to summon its darker twin, right-wing radicalism, a creature that rarely arrives without unprecedented amounts of blood. Moves and countermoves, as President Snow once whispered.

@henry Are you suggesting that leftist radicalism is responsible for what right wing radicals do?

@cleverboi Leftist radicalism is responsible first and foremost for what it does. It is also responsible for the rise of right-wing radicalism as a response. Actions within a system create feedback.

@henry So right wing radicals are not responsible for their own actions, then?Would also need a definition of "left wing radicalism" since, in the US at least, many people believe things like universal healthcare are "radical" just because Fox news told them so.

@cleverboi > So right wing radicals are not responsible for their own actions, then? Why so? They are responsible for their actions and for the rise of left-wing radicalism - another side of the unbalanced system.

@henry I hear what you're saying, that nothing exists in a vacuum, and that there are things that feed back into each other, but I disagree that that makes them "responsible". It sounds like an abusive partner saying "why do you make me hurt you".If you say that the left and right radicals are inherently responsible for each other, you basically remove all usefulness of the word "responsible".

@cleverboi What I'm trying to say is that radicalism itself is the problem, no matter which political direction it takes. People who were vulnerable enough to be radicalized can be seen as responsible. But the harsh reality is that this *game* plays by different rules: in the end, the losing side pays the price and ends up carrying the "responsibility" for both.

@henry @cleverboi We can date the rise in polarization to a specific individual, a specific organization and a specific set of documents.Neither the Contract for America nor the Tax Tax Pledge were created by leftists. The GOP became unhinged circa 1992 - '96.The rise in leftist extremism began 20 years later.

@henry Like saying that the left wing radicals are responsible for a right wing radical being killed by an even further right wing radical is what I would actually call an irresponsible thing to say.
