When you try to solve a problem but ignore the obvious solution everyone just starts reading things off of their wish list of things they always wanted to do anyway. In this case it's some kind of call to either kill or otherwise silence "the left."If I can't get fewer guns I guess I'll go for "Build a center in every city where people can study insects." What's on your wish list?

@futurebird Nothing about fascism is about solving problems. The call to kill or otherwise silence everyone is what it is about.

@futurebird Ban private jets. Build high-speed rail. Stop arming Israel.

@futurebird If we cannot have fewer guns; we could simply have fewer bullets.(I was reading about Swiss gun control laws lately. As well as having far fewer guns per person than here, the Swiss government has phased in restrictions on purchases and storage of ammunition.)

@futurebird Change the hideous, bulbous NYC logo that you see on municipal everything.I actually think Mamdani, with his design sense, will do this.

@futurebird vacancy fees. If you operate a rental and it isn’t rented for the month, you pay the local government what you were charging or you lower it 10% each month until you have a marketable price. Use the money to help the homeless because empty homes are what caused them.

@benfulton @futurebird I'm all for inconveniencing the super-rich, but banning private jets won't do much more than that. Solid second and third suggestions.

@futurebird @benfulton Yes but it won't have a significant impact on global emissions because it concerns so few people. As a way to reduce inequality, such a ban would be worth it, but the overall carbon footprint of private jets is negligible (2% of all aviation in 2023).

@hypolite @benfulton I agree. But I also think it will be hard, unreasonable even to expect everyone to adapt to pull the breaks on the climate crisis as long as a bunch of the richest jerks you can think of keep flying around in jets.We need to replace shorter plane flights with trains for example. Some people will think that's a downgrade (it's not but whatever) It's symbolically important.

@futurebird @benfulton Agree about the symbolism. In itself it's almost useless but it makes perfect sense as part of a host of other measures aiming at the same goal.

@hypolite @benfulton To the extent that addressing the climate crisis looks anything like austerity the richest must go first and take the biggest hit. That's just ... fair.

@futurebird If we're not going to stop police and civilian gun violence, build housing or do basic income? Maybe we could normalize more napping by building and maintaining public hammock parks and sleeping pods.
