Elon Musk doesn't really have an authentic national identity he is willing to embrace due to his racism. To be South African? Awkward, complicated. One would need to recognize the past and help be a part of building a multi-ethnic future. To be American? He will always be an immigrant. He's not "English" either. Maybe that's why he's latched on to whiteness?

@androcat Well he could also just be American ... but it would mean embracing the multi-ethnic multi-cultural vision of being American.

@futurebird I suspect he sees himself mainly in terms of the ruling class, Grand Duke without portfolio, who definitely recently found out he's not king but nevertheless very much entitled. I don't think he feels comfortable on Earth, and still dreams sometimes of being emperor of Mars.

@futurebird This describes many white rural Americans, not just Elon.America isn't a melting pot. It's a rice mill. Cultural identity is stripped away, and isolated people latch on to whatever "ism" they can to find a sense of identity, and often racism and nationalism are the easiest ones to find. That's part of why I think hacker culture has been so popular and positive in America - though hacker culture is not without its problems. It is, at least, an identity that is not directly tied to genocide and nationalism.
