I’ve just moved https://search.buddyverse.net to my very own personal server… tucked right under my bed! 😄For now, I’m exposing it via Cloudflare Tunnel since I don’t have a static IP yet. This is my first real dive into self-hosting. Everything before this lived on cloud services. Excited to finally take full control and experiment with hosting on my own hardware!Related: https://mitexleo.one/@ml/115197417636648238#homelab #selfhosting #selfhosted #privacy #cloudflare #searxng #linux

I'm aware of the potential privacy and security implications associated with Cloudflare. I'm looking for an alternative solution ..

@ml I use Synology's DDNS service to get around not having a static IP. That service is tied to having a Synology NAS, but there are definitely others. I've heard DuckDNS mentioned.

@shannonkay But that would would involve port forwarding if I'm not wrong. My router only supports no-ip and dyndns. These are very expensive.

@ml oh! but is port forwarding an option? bc you don't need to set the ddns up on the router, you can generally set it up on the server too, so should be able to use other providers too then. it's basically just a script who runs at certain intervals, checks if the ip address changed, and does a call to the ddns provider if so. the big question is how to get your own domain to change. maybe your registrar allows to use your domain as ddns. there's also providers (indeed like duckdns, i also know of netlib.re but don't have experience with them) who provide a subdomain they control. An option is to use a CNAME (for your own subdomains) or ALIAS (for your own domains) record to point to the ddns subdomain, but not all registrars allow ALIAS records.@shannonkay

@ilja @shannonkay I think I have to go to Pangolin route which is similar to Cloudflare Tunnel.

@ilja @ml Actually, that's similar to how I use ddns. The service runs on my NAS, not on my router. The service by Synology gives me a subdomain I can use to point to my NAS. I use that subdomain to set up CNAME or alias records with my domain registrar(pork bun). Usually CNAME records are what I use.
