Kids these days always on the ebike with the disc breaks. In my day we had but ONE gear. And we LIKED it. We felt lucky. Sometimes if you were going to get really fancy you could install a break.

But most of us? We use the shoe! Kids talking about "new shoes for their bike" and they are buying pads for their breaks. It's all gone too far. I haven't seen a good red light trackstand in YEARS.

@snosrapkungfu I have memories of cutting down the lever on my breaks and weigh it over and over to save ounces and now they just put a whole five pound battery on the bike.

@futurebird Putting powerful disc brakes on a 26er MTB might be playing bicycle on "easy mode." But the first green bike is easily my favourite personal bike of this century. It's about 20.5 lbs with shocks, 17 lbs (not pictured) in "cruiser" mode with carbon rigid forks.Single speeding really does develop a LOT of skills. Single speed off road forces you to embrace flow or give up the sport.p.s. Third bike is for trials. Hydraulic rim brakes, a rarity. Oh, the places we go with one speed!

Back in my day if you could get down to work without letting your pretty little toes touch the dirty street once you could feel good about that. 34th st was impossible, but if you found the flow it was possible. There was a legend about a biker with white souls on his shoes because he never touched the street. Saw him do a track stand for 80 seconds while a whole bus full of tourists unloaded. Didn't even flinch. Those were the days.

@futurebird True story. Friend of mine was really good at track stands. Got ticketed for running a stop sign 'cause he "didn't put his foot down." He took the ticket and his bike to court. Judge tore up the ticket after he did a 1 minute track stand.

@futurebird One of my mates has done a couple of rides of 50km or more nonstop recently. He can't track stand but if he comes to a light he'll cross to the other side, circle back, as needed until he can make the light green. On one of the rides he was waiting for someone to meet at a convenience store and just rode circles in the parking lot until they showed. Helps that he lives on the edge of town and is soon in the mountains, but I told him he's being crazy AF.

@FolksVelo I think it's mostly become nicer without really ever gentrifying since I've been here for the past 18 years or so. It's still very poor, but there are more people than ever, but it's also very friendly and safe all things considered. Like most of NYC everyone is very ambitious and always up to something "big"

@futurebird If it's any consolation, no gear but "high" is of any use on an ebike. Also, no ebike ships with high enough stock gearing to allow a human to usefully assist while traveling at 25mph.

I'm all for disc brakes (safety), but this whole ebike nonesense has gotten way out of hand. At this point, a good many of them are just straight up motorcycles. Motorcycles that get away with not being licensed on the technicality that they require you to turn over the pedals to make them go. 🙄
