i made a simple probe that lets me listen to light as sound, and recorded some interesting thingsheadphones recommended...

@natalie @clonejo Did you know™: in the time of 10MBit/s ethernet there used to be certain switch designs that allowed passive sniffing of traffic through activity LEDs because they were lazily wired to the tx pair and the resolution just barely worked out.Edit: found the paper, it’s about serial links. I’m pretty sure there used to be ethernet stuff too, but maybe I misremember.https://arxiv.org/pdf/2307.07043

@natalie Could you please specify that probe? What kind of sensor did you use (photo diode?), how is it amplified (opamp or something more sophisticated)? Thanks!

@Moss_the_TeXie@rheinneckar.social really simple, made from literal trash. powered by a usb power bank, output was connected directly to the line input of an old mp3 player with recording function

@natalie bonus points for everyone adding chip tunes to the status indicator LEDs of their next project

@natalie This reminds me of that thing where some researchers figured out they could recover (degraded versions of) whatever is playing in someone's headphones off of their laptop by watching how the power LED changes intensity :blobfox3c:

@natalie oh your variety of different things in the video is really cool!I took one such device to a chaos communication congress but it was mainly LEDs (and a cursed escalator)https://youtu.be/BtFYSkJQMyw?si=FUlR8E7yuw1QEVbc

@natalie Two observations/questions:1) What makes the sodium streetlight make a full sine wave rather than a rectified sine wave?2) any idea what could be causing those overtones on the nightlight?

@zuthal@floofy.tech 1 i have no answer for. on 2 it's from the rgb led, it's one of those self-contained fading ones, the overtone will be the pwm frequency, overtone going away means the individual colors are all at either 0% or 100% duty cycle
