Looking down on people for not changing their mind because you can find some argument to contradict them is just as silly as changing your outlook on life every time you watch a new TikTok video. The problem isn't how often you change and refine beliefs, but the question is why they do or don't change.

It's because, neurologically, we want to believe something at the limbic level, and we use our prefrontal cortex to justify whatever it is we want to believe. So people pretend to be "logical" but the reality is their monkey brains are just using the logic part of their brains to justify whatever it is they would have believed without logical capacity anyway.Or, in short, nobody is actually rational, but there are a lot of good pretenders who can fool even themselves.

@vic@shitpost.cloud I disagree with this, and think it's a carefully constructed mythology to deny agency and humanity to the public. That's not to say I don't understand what you're pointing at, on some level 'logic' is a biological luxury that not everyone can afford. The thing is that it is definitely possible to build up individual and community level defenses to some of the assaults that inhibit rational thinking. I think a significant part of what's wrong with society these days is that many status and power games are built on undermining these defenses.

@gabriel is there some form of shame you think could serve a useful function?

@radix023@noauthority.social In this specific context no. You can't shame people into intellectual honesty and curiosity, only conformity. In situations where these attributes aren't important, sure I guess shame can work.

@gabriel > Looking down on people for not changing their mindThe majority of people will go to hell, because they wont change their minds about Jesus. At some point, pity is wasted on them, and contempt suits them better.
