Amazingly, Shane Jones is saying what I've been saying since NZ's electricity producer+retailers were privatised: that they should be renationalised. That said, Jones' purpose is different from mine. He's citing cost concerns affecting businesses. For me, the inevitable problem will be the lack of a profitable business model as local production (mostly solar) leads to under-maintained services, and ultimately disruption of supply. 1/2

Seems to me, the big problem is poor regulation of the gentailers. The gov't can deal with this far more cheaply by *just doing their job*, i.e. regulating broken markets. If they were competent (and not captured by lobbyists) they could do similar with the supermarket duopoly. 2/2

With >=51% ownership of all the biggest gentailers they're already mostly nationalised. If anything is put to a shareholder vote then the NZ Government would have sufficient votes to make it so.I think what's happening here is that once again this pathetic coalition is being pathetic and trying to blame other people, rather than actually doing their job.@lightweight

@lightweight Why wait? Nationalisation without compensation should be the preferred option.
