While searching for information on an animation program called TVpaint, found a fuckin reddit thread or something where some guy had just uploaded some completely portable version to his google drive. Works perfectly. So clean, so fast. My entire lifetime of animation suffering has lead to this beautiful bounty. This clip was faster to make than anything else I've tried, and I've tried them all.

I had an old version but it was very complicated and frankly kinda shitty. they really removed a lot of the features, and yet everything left over is really all i needed.

And I don't want to get the eye of sauron on my google account for hosting it on -my- drive... If there's any kind of semi anonymous temporary upload thing you know of, I could pack it up and let you get at it if you want. Now just so you know, this is a hand-animation specific program for old-ass niggas like me. I don't even think it has vector capabilities or a symbol system like flash had.

Excuse me but what bullshit are you talking about? Syncthing is for syncing devices everytime something is dropped in a share folder. The creator of a sync can track all the devices & this just copies it from the share folder to every device added. This is really something ment for being on the same network or working with a team collaboration. This isn't just for simple file sharing as for onionshare cool lets make a .onion out of your direct ip nice but I wasn't looking for a 12hour download for 200 & something megabytes download.Jami a peer to peer chat application for instant messaging is cool & all but if you use tor on it the shit will not work. You just won't get the messages i've tried many times on tor & it just gets stuck forever.Anyways for the purpose of sharing a file one time what I listed above did the job & I now have it!

@mangeurdenuage yeaaahhh it's pretty good I guess, but I have a lot of expectations as to functionality.A lot of these animation programs charge on into development without so much as a line stabilizer algorithm. (we are drawing on a slippery glass or plastic tablet screen here, so it's honestly the first and most important factor in making any drawing program feel useable for me.)Though it seems to have a camera tool now. That's pretty cool. But nothing beats TVpaint. (it's FRENCH)

@Calvin I farted around for a while with it, and it's an interesting concept, but it's presently absent a lot of the the quality of life features that make drawing pleasant for me. If the drawing tools themselves are too clunky or unpleasant to work with, I just can't animate to the quality I want and lose my drive to continue almost instantly. But if you're big into 2D animation with 3D backgrounds, it's probably super good because you literally create a 2D plane that houses the drawing frames, and you can move it anywhere in the 3D environment you've cooked up. Probably great for iterating if that's your bag and you're one of those ultra drawing masters who can draw with their teeth.

@jerkdouglas@shitposter.world They're currently working on the "3.0" version of the tool/system. 1.0 was the same concept as the Blue Pencil plugin for Maya, while 2.0 was the "what if we went even. further. BEYOND!?!" take on it. I tried it a bit during the 2.0 era a few years ago and it seemed really good for character design because of its massively underrated stroke sculpting tools (vid related), but it seems they're wanting to push it to become a revolutionary previs toolset and (hopefully) an actual production-ready animation system. So, the good news is it should inly get better. But, your real-world experience sounds like what I figured for where it currently is. Can I ask what QOL things stood out to you the most as being missing or just not up to snuff? Also, small correction, it doesn't draw on a 2D plane, but rather creates essentially special vertices in 3D space as part of a Grease Pencil Object. This is what allows people to literally draw their 3D models, if you've seen that.(The video was done as part of a demonstration of what Grease Pencil 2.0 could do before it was officially a thing. That's why it's done in Blender 2.7x)Regarding TVPaint, I'd never heard of it before. I only knew about OpenToons or whatever the Ghibli program got renamed to, and of course Toonboom stuff.

@Calvin Huh.. Just figured what I was doing was dependent on my viewport. Well 30 minutes wasn't a comprehensive test anyway. But this looks a little better than what I remember. Most of the quality of life stuff has to do with stroke interpolation (Stabilizer) and the feel of the tools. Since digital art means you're drawing on a glass tablet screen at best, the stabilizers and application of opacity has to be able to be calibrated specifically to my muscle memory. (at least for cleanup work, but a little line stabilizing can help the sketches too)A real artist who is actually amazing can draw with anything and just compensate with patience and technique and multiple drafts and shit, but I've been playing the git gud game for well over 20 years, either I get my sketches out in one draft or I fall behind in my workload and go broke IRL.This seems to be able to address opacity and line weight and things, but maybe on the level of one of them "oekaki" programs. But since I have such a precise way I work, these things really have to come to me to be viable. However I'd be interested in following up on what it can do now, though normal 2D animation programs fit my brains better because they're designed for quick iterations with as close to what can be described as a "papery feel", and I have little patience for fiddling around in the weeds when I should be creativing.

@Calvin Hey you got it man.Bonus program to look into: "Animation Paper" by some swedish guy. (animationpaper.com) I was about to mention the primary weakness was their slow updates and lack of an adjustable line stabilizer... but the new version that perhaps came out mere moments or days or weeks ago seems to draw very nice lines with their own in-built one-size-fits-all stabilizer. It's annoying they are trying to reinvent the wheel and all, but if it works, it works! This program is really just for pencil tests and to then export to other software for cleanup.Very minimal HUD, as little ADHD goblins like myself need a really quiet environment. As the wonder of possibilities can potentially confuse and enrage us.Even in the Animator's Handbook, Milt Kahl had a little rant about not being smart enough to even listen to music while he animated. He was a maniac of course, but you get the idea.

@jerkdouglas@shitposter.world >dependent on my viewportOh, yes, that's more-or-less true, from what I understand, but similar to manipulating 3D geometry or sculpting depends on the orientation of the viewport.Since your first reponse, I looked a bit more into what the Blender team was doing with the Grease Pencil and it appears that GP 3.0 was initially implemented in Blender 4.0 (with gradual improvements since) and mainly focused on refactoring to improve performance and modernize it for the future. Some of those changes might improve some aspects of the "feel" issue you mentioned (smoother performance, which should help the interpolation algos feel less jank, plus "boolean eraser" that allows you to erase in a fill area like with raster graphics, rather than having to erase points/vertices surrounding it), but that might be an on-going thing for them to refine down the road."papery"I looked at TVPaint and I see why you like it. Many tools that aim high are focused on recreating the Flash approach to things, while this is just "old school, but technically digitial." It looks like it might be a good return to form for traditionalists (fingers crossed).I like how GP is a best of both worlds for organic and technical approaches to art and animation in a really profound and unmatched way (e.g. you can treat your art as either raster or vector without having to switch modes or something), but I'm not sure it'll be a true replacement for either just yet.I haven't done art seriously for any real length of time, but I think I can relate to your feeling about wanting to just focus on the work itself. Learning new tools/programs and paradigms can be fun, but mainly only when you actually feel like doing so.Thanks for taking the time to explaining your experience to me!

@Niloy005 @Calvin Yeah, the catch 22 for me is I need something to overwhelm the background noise in my head, I can usually turn it off after I get going... But theeeen I have to make sure that music is perfectly forgettable, largely a-rhythmic, non-lyrical... Basically something that never catches my attention and pulls me away out of the very specific mood that I'm trying to capture in a sequence.musicforprogramming.net came in handy.
