poor physical resilience, poor data integrity and retention at both rest and in flight, a mix of standard and proprietary protocols, a massive standards shitshow, utterly uninteligible branding on speed grades, and a market for fakes and bullshit claims that makes buying them a miserable gamble

microSD in particular is a product category that I find baffling. it is so physically small that it becomes useless as a portable storage medium because you 100% will lose it, and if you need any appreciable density or performance on the thing it's also very expensive, which makes losing it all the more terrible. so most of the time it's only getting used for expansion storage, which would be far better served by the device just having more native storage using a far better device type.

I still have one of those with two trays with a bunch of old 3.5". I doubt they still work. Bit rot and what not.

@gsuberland you may be too young to remember when devices by and large didn’t have computer connection capability of their own, which is where an SD card came in. It’s not supposed to be archival storage, it’s supposed to last at max from the time you press the shutter on your DSLR til you get home and pull the pictures Then cell phones came along and everything got weird

@gsuberland you may also be too young to remember when 128MB of rewritable removable storage was the Gucci option

@Dudebro @gsuberland got you beat: my first MP3 player had a proprietary storage system where you bought a whole ass additional battery pack (not rechargeable, it still needed AAs) and each one was 16 or 32 MB of storage

@rakslice absolutely not. I've got SATA SSDs here that have been working great since 2011, and most other pluggable storage is standardised around SATA, SAS, or NVMe, all of which are carefully designed to provide reliable data transport, specific guarantees on write wear longevity, and powered-off data retention periods that make them actually feasible to use for mid-term archival.

@gsuberland @rakslice do you know if there is a better format for storage in the mcu/low compute-power space?
