It took an embarrassing amount of time, but I was finally able to get Linux installed and running on my old G4 iMac so I can use it as a terminal to access my home servers!#Linux #RetroComputing #PowerPC #iMacG4 #Homelab #SelfHosting #Term #vintagecomputing

@devwithzachary I miss the #PowerPC days. Cool architecture. About 10 years ago I had an old dual G5 given to me. There were some issues with it and getting #Linux installed and functioning correctly. I suspect it was more hardware issues.Great use of the old hardware!

@peteorrall@bsd.cafe @devwithzachary@androiddev.socialThere are bugs in G5 towers' cooling system kernel module, at least that's what I observe on mine β€” at some point it considers itself liquid cooled (which it isn't in my case πŸ˜…) and that said cooling isn't working properly, so it starts spinning the fans full-speed β€” which is annoying, but not a deal breaker: can be worked around by removing the corresponding modules and re-inserting them every couple of minutes β€” doesn't interfere with its normal operation, mine can keep running for hours and it spins up fans only when appropriate.I've also experienced random lockups and reboots in the past, but I haven't observed anything like it in quite a while β€” could also be some kernel-level bugs, support for PowerPC machines in the kernel is low-priority, so I expect lots of bugs to be there and no one is fixing them. In my case I'm certain that those aren't hardware issues, because nothing of this sort happens when I boot 10.4 installed on the other hard drive.

@devwithzachary@androiddev.socialThis whole instance is hosted on an old G4 MacMini! 😁Mine's running old PowerPC fork of Void Linux with I few updated things I've built myself. But in your case, considering all the polkit and systemd stuff, I suppose it's something different. What distro is that?

@devwithzachary @m0xEE Lol I just spent a fair amount of time digging up this thread to tell you guys about this new distro I found, only to see it's what you used https://pkg.adelielinux.org/ that's some arch support

@mitchconner@clubcyberia.co @devwithzachary@androiddev.socialYeah, Adelie is a decent distro, I'm just not a fan of KDE and some of other choices of theirs. But a lot of development is still happening on PowerPC thanks to A. Wilcox and other Adelie contributors. E.g. I use Void on my PowerPC boxes, but I've built gcc-go 1.10 using Adelie's patch set.
