@bazkie@beige.party @yetzt@yetzt.meI'm holding on to Firefox 115, the old ESR. They are still making security patches for it because it's the last version that can run in Windows 7. But you can build it for other systems too of course — that is what I do.Works like charm! I mean, it might not support some of the latest web APIs, but if some website requires it, I probably don't visit it anyway 😅

@m0xEE @yetzt that's a great idea!but what I hate is that over time, more and more stuff will break, and eventually you basically get a choice of complying or just not using half of the internet. 😣similarly, I use windows for gaming, and I put windows 7 on it, but then steam went like "oh hey we're gonna drop support for windows 7" and you're forced to either upgrade or just not play games anymore (or play them on linux of course, but for some things that's not an option (yet))now we have the same thing with browsers.. and there's other things, too, like apps.. I'm not using a smartphone, and that's still very doable, but more and more things will require apps over time..all these things wouldn't be a problem with more open standards, open source projects, less vendor-locked-in stuff, etc../rant

@bazkie@beige.party @yetzt@yetzt.meA agree, this used to be the case, but I feel it no longer is — either I'm "getting too old for this shit" or things are indeed slowing down. That is true, I do not use a lot of websites — and especially those feature-rich ones, which can be considered web applications. But otherwise — most things I use keep working even in Pale Moon, which is way behind even this old Firefox in terms of supporting features, even in my web thingies, where I control absolutely everything, I still see things looking differently because some of the CSS features aren't supported.Hell, some things still work fine even on my Lumia 950 XL — a phone from 10 years ago, that haven't received any updates in years. That is true — they keep pushing new features to keep us hooked, but at the same time, it appears that people are not so eager to adopt all this, many are no longer interested in new computers and even phones — the improvements they offer no longer seem attractive, and some features are outright off-putting. Fedi is sort of a bubble in this regard, many are sceptical towards new technologies, but to me it feels like this trend extends well outside our short circle. Check out the comments on GSMArena — a website for phone enthusiasts: there are many comments from those who keep using their phones well longer than three years, and they are either seeking gadgets that get supported longer or just durable ones 🀷‍

@bazkie @m0xEE @yetzt I have a smartphone running GrapheneOS, and I've been lucky enough that my banking app even works on it (though its actual utility is up for debate, as I can just do things via web), but I do fear that living a life without Google's (or Apple's) walled garden will not be an option. (It's already pretty unreasonable - notifications for a lot of apps don't work well or at all, because Firebase.)

@bazkie @m0xEE @yetzt I do hope more people go openly against the duopoly (and hopefully every other tentacle of the tech kraken - for example, meeting someone who's anti-Google but pro-OpenAI is... an experience). But we're still up for ages of technological unpleasantness, I believe.

@bazkie @m0xEE @yetzt A recent small success I recall is with ISIC. They cancelled revalidation stickers on the cards, requiring a student to either extend the validity of their card in the app, or get a whole new one made (at a higher financial and material cost). After backlash from students, they brought back the stickers.

@ozzelot @m0xEE @yetzt hm right, banking is one of those things.. my bank is already whining my browser is too old when I'm logging in on web, but it still works. but at some point it might stop working.viaplay streaming also doesn't work on most older browsers.. so annoying. they could just offer a videostream!! :((I'm thinking of buying a phone/computer just for important apps/sites that won't work, with win11 on it and all other terrible stuff, and that I ONLY use for those specific things.but I'd rather not!

@m0xEE @yetzt well I'm happy to hear that :) I had to stop using my GSM because it only supported 2G and that stopped existing. but luckily there's still some modern GSMs that do support 5G so that's nice!I hope you're right that the web will not change too much. maybe I should also try palemoon if firefox gets too bad..

@bazkie @m0xEE @yetzt Oh yes - I am also lucky enough to live in a country where 2G still exists, from all three providers no less. (3G no longer does. And the railways have their own 2G infra, but that's not relevant to civilian use.)

@nemuizabrak@mastodon.world @bazkie@beige.party @yetzt@yetzt.meDo you know by chance whether they patch the option to turn off WebPee support back in? As in, does image.webp.enabled about:config preference still work?I know it might not be a popular opinion, but I don't my browser to support it. In 115 the preference still exists and for newer versions I have a patch that restores the option to turn it off, but if Librewolf has it as is, I might consider switching to it instead of building Firefox myself.I used to believe I'm in the tiny minority here, but turns out there are other people with severe WebP allergies. Someone even made a guide on building latest Pale Moon without WebP 🀣http://shystudios.us/blog/palemoon_webp/palemoon_without_webp.html

@bazkie @ozzelot @m0xEE @yetzt Came downthread to make this same point.I think to get through the next period, 2 devices is the least-worst compromise for most of us that have reasons like employment and banking etc. to touch the broken big tech crap.I'm just starting down this road but my plan is to be ruthless and hermetically seal the good from the bad. That way I can make a virtue out of necessity by incentivizing myself to replace bad with good, on the good device.

@jaystephens @bazkie @m0xEE @yetzt I currently get to only have good things on the good phone (by virtue of lack of employment, partially), but should my next job require some surveillancey or otherwise broken thing, there shall be a device for that.

@ozzelot @bazkie @m0xEE @yetzt In my world as a taker of short contracts in the IT space in Australia, this stuff has been bubbling away but recently ramped up fast, alongside a transition to almost 100% BYOD for phones ( whereas I was issued a phone as a contractor in 2019 and again in 2021).Microsoft intune, usually in the "configured to allow the company to remote wipe your device" mode, is configured as a prereq for Teams & Outlook, both required for work.

@jaystephens@mastodon.social @ozzelot@mstdn.social @bazkie@beige.party @yetzt@yetzt.meSo they want to be able to wipe your phone and do not even want to compensate you for that? 😲Sounds horrible!

@m0xEE @jaystephens @ozzelot @bazkie @yetzt my company did that. I said no. They can't officially reach me on my phone now basically. But I can still access outlook via the web app and teams via Firefox. And they can't wipe my device. No intune. The security "requirement" of intune is actually not enforceable. I don't even need a lock screen set.

@poleguy @m0xEE @ozzelot @bazkie @yetzt My solution of buy a AU$80 phone and a minimum price SIM (all of which is tax deductible) so I can take those contracts, is the least-friction approach. This way it doesn't even come up, and the work phone's off when I don't wanna be reached and no work people have my private number. It's not ideal, but it's simple. For short contracts it's now usually 100% a precondition.

@jaystephens @m0xEE @ozzelot @bazkie @yetzt yeah. I'd do that too if it mattered. But for me it's not required for the job. They might even pay for a phone for me if I insisted. The engineering management thinks it is dumb. But IT dictates all sorts of rules that aren't worth fighting. All it means is I can't use the official apps on my phone. Their loss. Better ability to disconnect for me after hours.

@ozzelot @bazkie @m0xEE @yetzt Yeah I think all the smart solutions will balance elements of: - retaining access to the corpo walled gardens - strictly sandboxing and monitoring the corpo apps- maximizing utility of the FOSS toolset in order to minimize how often we touch the corpo apps.Approaches like loading the corpo apps onto an emulated device that's activated only as required by the host OS, or carrying a 2nd evil phone when needed... that's the future for most of us.

@m0xEE @jaystephens @ozzelot @bazkie @yetzt the way most employers in the US get around this is providing a (very much symbolic) “stipend” to offset your phone service costs. This becomes part of a larger employment contract where they can make you use a phone you otherwise pay for, with their shit on it. So *technically* they are compensating you for it, but in most cases not really
