@reginasbread @lgbtqia @reginasbread @lgbtqia Stop the presses. It's ok to change who you are? What about "born this way"?I don't disagree. But I've become accustomed to having to either accept "born this way" rhetoric or strenuously avoid the topic.I tend to think "born this way" rhetoric is wielded as a defense against "conversion therapy" rhetoric. I'm squarely in the "ok this way, whether born this way or grown into it".

@phaedral @reginasbread @lgbtqia I personally think 'born this way' doesn't work for everyone. Life is fluid. People are fluid. You might've only liked apples when you were young but now you prefer oranges. Or you've discovered a new love for cherries. It's really that simple. As always, everything in life is temporary, in the most romantic way.But I'm coming from the bi angle, a community where a lot of people don't feel queer enough, discover it about themselves later in life, etc.

@Radgryd @reginasbread @lgbtqia I don't argue with the "born this way" folks. Perhaps some are. Bit the reasoning seems as specious when applied to "queerness" as when applied to substance abuse or left-handedness.With AA it is a historical fact that the "disease model" was cynically pushed as a way to reduce guilt and stigma even though it's proponents knew it was false. I sense "born this way" serves a similar purpose. But must adherents to these beliefs are sincere...and unquestioning.

@phaedral @reginasbread @lgbtqia I think it's closely tied to the fact that some people, some cultures and society in general see it as 'a choice', which it isn't. You love who you love, you can't force it.
