I found this post interesting, especially since this author claims those terrible places are where readers are, and yet, I've found an audience here in the #Fediverse that donates to me to keep me writing, that supports my audiobook/podcast narrators I link to, and a whole other type of audience, so never trick yourself into thinking there's only one kind of audience. https://juliaserano.blogspot.com/2025/06/regarding-substack-and-writer-centric.html #Substack #IndieWeb #Author #Artist

@WeirdWriterI like the bits where the author lists a load of companies that I try to avoid and asks, I think rhetorically, "are we boycotting these companies too?"

@priryo I giggled at that part! They’re not totally wrong though, about the audience. I’m thinking about of course continuing to publish on my own website, but having little pockets of like, Sightless Scribbles syndication or something similar, where I just publish only a handful of things with constant links back to my original website, so if places like medium, and otherwise, if they disappear, then I won’t have lost anything because The main core of my work is on my own website. By the way my website is https://sightlessscribbles.com/ and my podcast is https://weirdwritings.pinecast.co/

@WeirdWriter > I just publish only a handful of things with constant links back to my original websiteThis is the way. Build your castle in your own kingdom, visit other kingdoms to invite people to visit it. One thing I've suggested in the context on YouTub is to post teaser versions of videos, with links to the full version on PeerTube. A writer could do a similar thing by posting a TL;DR on SS, Medium, etc, with a Read More link pointing to the actual article on your own site.@priryo

@WeirdWriter This article is intriguing, giving an insight into how writers convince themselves they need to remain on SS, LockedIn, Median, etc. There's a lot of stuff it ignores (eg network effects), but main one is that all those things that make a writer feel like they're building an audience on SS, are there to lock us in. Much of it is illusory too, as David Farrier points out in his posts on leaving SS;@indexhttps://www.webworm.co/webwormisleavingsubstack/https://www.webworm.co/moresubstackthoughts/

Hey sorry for the late reply, but yes! Fully agree on everything! That's what I might start doing, actually, is just flooding other spaces with TLDR versions of my writing with links back to the original so they can read it if they so wish. At the moment, I'm flooding podcast directories with my RSS feed, though! https://weirdwritings.pinecast.co @strypey @index
