Why is Housing Works thrift shop asking me to “show photo ID.. to enter the store?” I was not aware they were part of the got damn british internet all of a sudden. “you need a photo ID to buy anything”“I can’t pay cash?”*blank stare* “need to see photo ID”Meanwhile other people are just walking in and out. So, naturally I left. Will not be back. Are people just showing their IDs for any little thing now?

@futurebird I would stubbornly take my refusal to show ID to the checkouts and force them to choose between their bullshit policy or my money. But the photo on my ID is also from like two or three logs ago. They'd probably say it's a fake anyway.

I've never had anyone ask me for a photo ID just to look around a shop.And frankly I don't think people should have to even have an ID on them. It's absurd to expect that. @futurebird it is a weird vibe and definitely not one that makes sense or should be entertained. Bored people in faux positions of power are the ones to watch though. He could maybe justify it as shop lifting proactivity but really it is probably the worst kind of profiling and he's just getting practice for when he gets to where his big boy pants for ICE. @david_preston Admittedly I'm a little prickly about the whole "show your ID thing" ... the other day I was buying a vape* from 7/11 in the same neighborhood. I've never bought one before and was not surprised to be asked for proof of age. I showed my passport. They refused to accept it. Computer system can't scan a passport. It only scans driver's licenses and "state IDs" (state IDs only exist in the US because of the janky way we rely on Driver's licenses.)*tacky bad, blame my uncle

Because that doesn't sound like something innocent or necessary to me, and racism is my go-to explanation for non-innocent, non-necessary activities that can be read as exclusionary.

@futurebird So weird. I really dislike this type of security theater.I live near a military base, and you have to show your ID to get on base. Why? I don't know. Rentacop with an empty holster looks at it, then waves you through. If you have a DOD sticker on your car they barely look at you. BTW this is Fort Stewart I'm talking about, the exact one that had the recent shooting by a soldier who brought his personal firearm on base and, one assumes, had the proper ID and DOD sticker on his car

@alienghic As someone who works at a school we are terrified of a non-parent... often a relative taking a kid when they aren't the right person listed to do so. But if they could verify it was you by birthday that'd probably be enough. And if the kid is old enough they will tell you who that is. But that's what this is about. The photo of the ID is a too much IMO.

@futurebird @alienghic yeah, I've worked in ECE schools for eons and if you aren't the regular person doing pickup I'm going to ask questions:Are you on the emergency card?Do you have id?relying on the kiddo doesn't work - because while the child may recognize and run to an adult happily - the child may not know there's a restraining order or custody issueI have called parents and said " I have auntie lia here to pick up martin and she's not on the emergency card" Parents usually appreciate diligence.(but we don't take electronic or other copies of the id)

@futurebird In some U.S. states, an ID is required to buy cigarettes. They scan your driver's license. Whether they retain the data, I don't know. What I do know is that the list of buyers would be valuable to someone.Same for pot stores

@futurebird @david_preston I was buying beer earlier today at my neighborhood grocery. Apparently they have some sort of ID at the register that they scan when the person is obviously 21+, but it was missing, so the cashier asked for an ID. I showed my passport, but she couldn't use that because it wouldn't scan. Eventually she found an ID at another register that she could use.
