#MatrixDown: So, is the main issue of #Matrix too many users using the main instance, a condition actively pushed by #Vector, creating half-centralized ecosystem? Is it the issue that #Matrix servers are a overly complex and resource hungry systems, which are hard to administrate and even harder to troubleshoot? π€Or is it a combination of these problems? Hmmm. π#Messenger #Federation #Decentralize #XMPP

@cryptgoat I'd want to point out that the issues that caused the downtime have nothing to do with Matrix servers being difficult to administrate or resource hungry (which I personally don't believe is true, been self-hosting my own private Matrix server for 7 years). Disk failures and those type of issues that occurred there as described by Matrix.org team seem to be rather general issues sysadmins have to deal with from time to time (I'll leave the question whether those should occur in the first place if managed properly to someone else). And the severity of the issue is only multiplied by the fact it's a large instance with a lot of data to manage.I do believe that the problem is bad decentralization of #Matrix, something I've been raising in the past, to which I've seen rebuttals from Matrix team with arguments which didn't personally convince me but there is some logic to them that some may find more convincing.

@cryptgoat someone did a mistake. Simple and it happens. But, yes matrix(synapse) is a complex software with a lot of strange decisions but the best we have for building safe and open communication hubs.

@cryptgoat now sure, one could say this is just a general sysadmin fuckup, since it was a database thing and probably not to do with synapse or matrix itself, maybe. i'm sure an xmpp server with similar user amount could also implode like thatstill totally kicking them while they're down, teehee

@cryptgoat No - running your own server is not really hard. I started using Matrix just a few days ago and from day two on I had my own server as soon as I found https://element-hq.github.io/synapse/latest/setup/installation.htmlYou can either use Docker or run it native in Debian/Ubuntu. Using PostgreSQL instead of SQLite is recommened. Migrating after the initial setup is also possible but maybe a bit tricky.
