The main Matrix homeserver (matrix.org) is down and likely to remain down for a while longer:https://mastodon.matrix.org/@matrix/115135992360783162Our Matrix rooms are still available since those aren't hosted on any specific server. We use our own Matrix server for our project accounts, bridge bot, etc. too.

Our chat rooms are bridged across Matrix, Discord, Telegram and IRC.Discord server: https://discord.com/invite/grapheneosIRC channels are on libera.chat with the same names as the Matrix rooms but prefixed with #grapheneos such as #grapheneos-offtopic. #grapheneos-general redirects to #grapheneos there.

Our chat rooms were only on Matrix after the end of freenode but we ended up needing alternatives due to both the technical and abuse issues with Matrix. Discord is now the most active. Long term, we plan to self-host a future high quality open source Discord clone and drop Matrix/Telegram/IRC.

@GrapheneOS not sure if its just mine aversion to discord triggers here or its slowly start looks like discord advertising campaign... and drop matrix and irc intentions definitely cut out huge chunk of tech savy users from access...

@drathir You're misreading what we wrote. An open source Discord clone is not Discord. IRC is a terrible experience in 2025 especially for rooms where most of the users are on platforms with long messages, edits, media, etc. We want a self-hosted, open source and non-federated platform to avoid the major issues with federation preventing proper moderation and anti-abuse. Matrix also has huge technical and abuse issues beyond the baseline inherent to a federated platform designed the way it is.

@drathir We had to recreate our Matrix rooms last month due to a security flaw in the protocol requiring a new room version:https://matrix.org/blog/2025/08/security-release/We're now on our 5th generation General chat room and 4th generation Off Topic room. Development and infrastructure rooms are on their 3rd generation, as is the Space. The others are on their 2nd generation. Is it reasonable to use a chat platform requiring repeatedly recreating rooms where there's a lot of friction involved in people moving?

Our Telegram group is https://t.me/GrapheneOS but we recently set it to require requesting to join and being approved by a moderator due to the massive issues with spam. We recommend joining our chat rooms via either a non-matrix.org Matrix server (even after it's back, it's too large) or Discord instead.

@drathir We're happy with https://discuss.grapheneos.org/ (Flarum) and want a self-hosted, non-federated platform for our chat rooms too. There unfortunately isn't currently one meeting our requirements. revolt.chat is the kind of approach we want but it's far more mature enough and is not actively developed enough. There are a lot of competing chat systems so it's unclear if a good one for self-hosting public chat rooms will actually get the required critical mass to provide a Discord level experience.
