Gov. Pritzker of Illinois has been doing a good job talking to residents of Chicago about the coming invasion. He hasn't spent time being defensive acting like this makes any sense or is about "crime" or trying to wrestle with the right wing framing of the event. This just makes it seem totally illegitimate and unwanted by the people which it is. I still want to know what happens if/when ICE defies the rule about not running around unidentified.

@futurebird I think nothing happens. There would need to be people willing to make those arrests. If CPD were actuary accountable to Chicagoans, sure, but I don't think any police department fits that description.

Newsome tried to do something similar but he seemed less grounded and less convincing and I can't put my finger on why. I guess Newsome seemed more in "fighting Trump" then how scary it is for the people of LA to have troops goose steeping all over the place snatching people. Your people are SCARED. Do something about it.

When they try to pull this in NYC I fully expect Gov. hochul to yell at the city and say "you better be nice to the army you raggamuffins" or something like that. Then she will give a two hour lecture on how the NYPD can do no wrong and how much she loves putting armed guards in the subway. (I really don't know what she will do, since she *already did this*)

@futurebird I get that a lot people enjoy Newsom’s trolling, but you are right that it it doesn’t help the people in California who are on the receiving end of the trump administration’s malfeasance. Newsom seems to be to be trying to beat trump at his own game and it’s a stupid game

@futurebird I get the sense that Newsom falls flat because people suspect that he's just questing for power, that there's no real conviction in him.But maybe I'm wrong.

@futurebird keep in mind California was first with the federal invasion thing. I don't think Newsom (or anyone in actual power) actually believed Trump would move in troops on a pretext. Horribly naive of D leadership. There is a reason Newsom is now publicly fighting back, loudly.It's much easier to react appropriately reassuringly when you've watched things unfold in two other cities.
