I run a shop. I didn't process a single cash transaction for 3 weeks and did under 20 for the whole year. So I decided to go electronic only as it's so much cheaper. Suddenly everyone's up in arms. Maybe if they actually used cash they could complain. But they don't.

@fesshole Other than conspiracy theory, what are the good reasons for society's keeping cash?

@BonehouseWasps @fesshole the one that makes me very glad it's still in use where I am is that, if I want to leave a tip for bar staff, I can make sure it goes to them rather than into a pot where a payment processor takes 2-4% off the top for the privilege, and the owner decides that they also get a share, etc. Also, some people just don't like the idea of a company automatically knowing about where /when / how they spend their money. Nothing particularly unreasonable about that.

@narpoleptic @BonehouseWasps @fesshole and in a natural disaster (typhoon/earthquake are popular here) no electricity means suddenly everyone is cash only.

@Haikyoneko @narpoleptic @fesshole That does make a lot of sense. Thanks. We don't get a lot of typhoons in Dorset.

@BonehouseWasps @narpoleptic @fesshole it's weird that here in Japan there are some businesses that are cash only. My doctor and vet being 2 examples. On the other hand! I almost never use cash anywhere else. We have nfc and barcode payments almost everywhere. Which is great if you want to collect points, but bad if you don't like being tracked, and your spending data used/sold.

@Haikyoneko @BonehouseWasps @fesshole that's a good point - Spain had its first-ever national blackout earlier this year. It lasted less than 24 hours, sure, but during that time what businesses could run were doing so on a cash basis.
