@amd The following applies in general rather than specifically to the three cities mentioned.1. Coffee is the religion of the nation. Australians would, as a general rule, NEVER go to Starbucks as they sell something resembling mud. Each time you go into a cafe, try something different off the menu until you decide what you like most and then order that in different places.2. At some point, you will decide to have ‘fish and chips’ at a beach. Fish and chip shops are everywhere and will ask if you want salt or chicken salt on your chips. ALWAYS ask for Chicken Salt. You can thank me later.3. Australia does not have bottomless drinks (ie, you can’t get unlimited refills).4. No one in Australia drinks Fosters - it is slop we send overseas.5. All taxes are included in the advertised price.6. You do not have to tip in Australia as we have reasonably decent wages here and people do not expect a tip. If the price is $X on the menu (for example) then that is the actual price. 7. Follow the late Anthony Bourdain dictate of eating where the locals eat - that will generally be at cafes etc rather than chain stores.8. Multiculturalism is everywhere and we do not have to be ‘from that culture’ to make/serve it. Apparently Americans seem to think that, for example, only people of Mexican descent can make Mexican food. That is not the case in Australia as we have Multiculturalism. Enjoy all the different styles of food from around the world.9. Say Bun. Now say Bn (without the u). Say it a few times. Now say Brisbn and Melbn. You now speak a bit of Australian. Vowels are really important as you can’t spell words properly without them. That does not mean that we actually pronounce them. Never say BrisBANE or MelBORNE, ALWAYS SAY Brisbn and Melbn.10. If a word has two or more syllables, Australians will usually shorten the word and add a ‘y’ at the end. So breaky (breakfast), Brisy (Brisbane) Rocky (Rockhampton) etc. But NEVER make the mistake of saying Melby … no one ever shortens Melbourne (Melbn - see above) and if you do then it is highly likely that the person you are speaking to will immediately call Border Force and have you held in immigration detention and then deported.11. Locals will seldom correct you if you say something the wrong way (eg, saying all the vowels - see above). Listen to how people say things or refer to things and try to copy these things in the future.12. Vegimite - it is everywhere and you should try it … BUT don’t spread it as thick as peanut butter. Spread it really, really thin - no thinner than you are currently imagining. Just try it on some toast - maybe at a hotel where you get an all you can eat breakfast so you can have something else if you don’t like it. We eat it from early childhood, so we are used to it and that is why we really like it.Good luck and have fun.
