Books on tape! Books on tape! er or um audio books, I guess. Dang I sound old (but I am old. so i don't care) anyways you can get all kinds of great non-fiction books to listen to at your library or you can do torrents like a criminal (of course you would only get books in the public domain then) Anyways. Listening books is a great way to broaden your mind. Libraries are incredible, you can get the book right on your phone and don't even have to go in to pick it up.

Try to avoid the Amazon service "audible" because they will lock you in and when you decide you don't want to give any more money to amazon it will be a pain to get away from them. Possibly speaking from experience. Buy physical copies of the books you enjoy so you can take notes in them and get them signed by your favorite authors. And it's great to have for reference. I read much faster than any audio book can talk ... so I think I get more from the audio since it slows me down.

@futurebird Not so easy for me. I got into audiobooks because I got behind in reading for pleasure and spent so much time in front of a computer that my eyes needed a rest. You can listen to books with eyes closed, while doing boring or odious tasks, travelling (I cannot read while moving), and really good narrators make me prefer audiobooks to tv and movies.

@futurebird Before Libby my public library used to have audio book devices call playaways, I loved them.

@futurebird friend who’s a bookseller shared that both Bookshop.org partnership for things she doesn’t have in stock and Libro.fm for audiobooks give her a proper commission when I buy them. I use audiobooks partly because I do so much crafting

@futurebird I personally loathe audiobooks and getting my info that way. At the same time, I'm losing some of my vision, so my old hardcopies aren't as useful as they were. Right now I'm blowing up the font on ebooks, but there may come a day when audio is my only option. I think the important thing to remember is that what's perfect for some people may be unusable for others, and that's ok. I love that we have books in so many formats nowdays, so that as many people as possible can enjoy them.

@futurebird The only time I use Amazon is when I buy something on their site (Amazon.com). Never thought about using their services for anything other than that. Thanks for the heads up though, myrmepropagandist.

@smh @futurebird when I was overseas and absolutely dirt poor, a bunch of likeminded volunteers had a library in the nearest city that did exactly this. The conversations in the margins of The Snow Leopard made it an utterly transformative read—one that otherwise would’ve been very solitary. Strong recommend.

@futurebird I love audiobooks. I love how different narrators breathe life into the text. One of my fears is that there will be a push for AI to replace live narrators in audiobooks. I have stopped using Audible, and found software to export the books I bought and store them locally. Yes, it's a pain if you're not tech-literate, but I found it fairly doable.
