The key to understanding AI capabilities, is asking it to do something you already know well.Since I have a background as a professional writer, sometimes I've been asked to take someone else's hastily-written brain dump and "make it good". It's almost always more effort to fix the writing, than it would have been to write it from scratch. This isn't just a grammar thing, but word choice, flow, and all the other things professional writers labor over.#aihttps://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/humans-hired-to-fix-ai-slop-rcna225969

@kyle Over on r/sql, r/awk, and especially r/regex I regularly see posts of the form "I asked $LLM to give me {sql/awk/regex} to do _____, and it gave me ______ but it doesn't work, how do I fix it?" And if it's that bad with the technologies that I *do* know, I have my serious doubts as to how reliable it is in technical areas I don't understand.Straight up wrong answers. Useless answers. Answers that don't compile or are otherwise syntactically invalid. Answers that change depending on unknowable/uncontrollable factors. It's a mess. But it's also job security cleaning up that mess. 😉

@kyle I nominated a colleague who was born overseas for a professional society award. Because the colleague is not a native speaker, he/she added some biographical details and then asked ChatGPT to fix up the resulting text. The result simply didn't scan -- full of em dashes, which I never use in sentences (except for today). Another sentence had no verb.

@kyle I absolutely agree about it being easier to write something from scratch, than to fix someone else's prose. This happens A LOT when dealing with translation.
